Summary of the role
ECMWF will be part of the new Horizon 2020 project HiDALGO, which will explore the advanced coupling of numerical weather forecast model output to other models and applications and develop services to allow weather product generation to run on Cloud environments.
This new position sits in the Development Section of the Forecast Department and it will further strengthen the activities of delivering model outputs in the team. The role of the team is to support the development of new services to provide access to data from ECMWF forecasts and activities. The Analyst will work within the Scalability team to support the evolution of existing services but also to explore and setup the provision of data through new services and standards.
The successful candidate will contribute to the developments of project to enable ECWMF to bring this system into operational status. He or she will apply their knowledge and expertise to contribute to future developments to ensure a successful evolution of ECMWF’s modelling and data services.

Main duties and key responsibilities
Interacting with the internal and external project team and support the deliverables of the HiDALGO project
Assisting project partners in using and integrating ECMWF data in their processes and services; providing feedback for possible improvements to the systems
Contributing improvements to ECMWF’s data delivery systems as part of the work of the Development Section
Contributing and improving documentation on how ECMWF model data can best access and assist in outreach and communication on these
Personal attributes
Excellent problem-solving skills with a proactive approach, together with an interest in identifying, investigating and solving technical problems
Interest in exploring the technical viability of new technologies within the ECMWF context
Dedication and enthusiasm to work in a small team
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, listening to and respecting the views of others
Ability to work under pressure
Qualifications and experience required

Education

A university degree, or equivalent, in a discipline related to computer science, physics, mathematics or engineering is required. A PhD is desirable but not essential.

Experience

Good knowledge in handling large amounts of earth science data; ideally knowledge of ECMWF & Copernicus data.

Experience with working with NWP models - especially on data input/output

Experience in using weather/climate data in machine learning environments would be an advantage.

Experience in using cloud services for processing of weather/climate data of would be advantageous.

Experiences using visualisation tools would be an advantage.

Experience with developing and maintaining scientific codes would be an advantage.

Experience in processing and managing large spatial data sets is an advantage.


Knowledge and skills (including language)

Very good knowledge of object-oriented programming developing with C/C++/Python.

Good knowledge of UNIX, experience developing software for UNIX systems (and/or Linux) and the use of system calls is essential.

Good understanding of computer science concepts (efficient algorithms and data structures) is required.
Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and interviews will be conducted in English.

A good knowledge of one of the Centre’s other working languages (French or German) would be an advantage.

Grade remuneration
The successful candidate will be recruited at the A2 grade, according to the scales of the Co-ordinated Organisations and the annual basic salary will be £58,238.40 net of tax. This position is assigned to the employment category STF-PL as defined in the Staff Regulations.

Starting date: As soon as possible.
Length of contract: 30 months but finishing no later than 31 October 2021.
