The Department of Soil, Water, and Climate at the University of Minnesota
(U of M) seeks a faculty member with strong expertise in climate science
and a passion for community engagement and for communicating climate
information to agricultural producers, natural resource managers, other
industry stakeholders, the broader public, and policymakers.

Appointment and Position Description:



This is a nine-month tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant or
Associate Professor with duties divided between Extension (60%) and
Research (40%). The position is in the Department of Soil, Water, and
Climate on the flagship Twin Cities campus of the U of M. Applications are
encouraged from candidates with expertise in any relevant area of climate
science, such as meteorology, climatology, atmospheric chemistry,
hydroclimatology, hydrometeorology, etc.



The appointee will be expected to develop an extension program to
communicate critical climate and meteorological information useful for
decision making in agricultural production, forestry, and management of
natural resources with a focus on climate adaptation, and to develop a
locally, nationally, and internationally recognized research program
related to climate science.


As part of this position, the appointee will work with the Minnesota State
Climatology Office (co-located within the department), as well as with the
National Weather Service to promote climate science literacy among diverse
audiences across the state of Minnesota. The appointee is also expected to
collaborate with climate, agricultural and silvicultural scientists as
appropriate to identify potential strategies for adaptation to changing
climate conditions.  Participation in various Extension and state programs
such as initiatives associated with the Cropping Systems working group, the
Extension Disaster Education Network (EDEN) and the Minnesota Climate
Adaptation Partnership (MCAP) is expected. Extension’s mission is to
provide effective, research-based education that integrates diverse
perspectives to address critical issues impacting Minnesota’s agriculture
and natural resources.



The appointee is expected to collaborate in research with U of M faculty
and develop research networks outside the U of M.  In addition, the
appointee will be expected to secure extramural research funding from state
and national competitive grant programs; recruit and advise graduate
students; participate in faculty governance; participate in, and as
appropriate, provide leadership to the outreach activities of the
Department and College statewide and nationally.



Qualifications:



Minimum:

·       A Ph.D. in climate science, atmospheric science, meteorology, or a
closely related discipline

·       A strong potential for excellence in climate research

·       A track record of publishing in leading peer-reviewed scientific
journals

·       Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication skills

·       Demonstrated experience in public engagement



Desired:

·       Experience working in interdisciplinary teams

·       Commitment to serving traditionally underrepresented and culturally
diverse groups

·       Post-doctoral or professional experience in climate science

·       Experience communicating climate science to broad audiences

·       Demonstrated success in securing extramural research funding
