The Southwest Biological Science Center’s Terrestrial Dryland Ecology Group
is seeking a biological science technician. This position will collect data
in grassland and shrubland ecosystems across the Colorado Plateau,
including measurements regarding soil conditions, plant traits, and
community composition. Technicians on this project may be based in
Flagstaff, AZ, or Moab, UT.

*Duties:*

   - Collects biological, botanic, genetic, and soil data and/or samples
   from field locations in grassland and shrubland plant communities across
   the Colorado Plateau.
   - Performs laboratory analyses to determine specified chemical,
   biological, genetic, or physical characteristics.
   - Operates a government motor vehicle as an incidental driver.
   - Work may be physically challenging and includes walking, bending,
   climbing, and lifting of equipment up to 50lbs while in the field,
   sometimes during adverse conditions. Office work (e.g., data entry)
   requires the ability to sit for prolonged periods.
   - Operates a motor vehicle as an incidental driver.

*Desired skills:*

   - Practical knowledge of the technical methods and procedures of
   biological sciences to organize and execute a variety of projects.
   - Knowledge of routine field data collection procedures in order to
   collect biological data.
   - Skill in the operation, maintenance, and servicing of a variety of
   biological recording and measuring instruments.
   - Knowledge of procedures and techniques utilized in biological and/or
   genetic laboratories for measuring the physical, chemical, and/or genetic
   parameters of organisms.
   - Must be able to travel and spend up to two weeks at a time in remote
   field locations that may not have facilities.
   - Experience using dichotomous keys to assist plant identification and
   knowledge of common plant species across the Colorado Plateau.

The grade for this position is either GG-4 or GG-5, depending on the
successful applicant's qualifications.

To qualify for GG-4, you must have: 1 year of college work related to the
field of employment, OR 6 months of field survey party experience OR 2
years of sub-professional experience.

To qualify for GG-5, you must have 3 years of college study plus 3 months
lab or field experience OR 9 months of field survey party experience OR 3
years of sub-professional experience.

*Definitions of Experience*

*Field Survey Party —* Experience with a field survey party includes
activity associated with making and recording geologic, hydrologic,
biologic, or topographic field observations; collecting geologic,
biological, or water samples for laboratory analysis; applying accepted
data collection techniques and methods in the performance of field work in
support of scientific investigations; and using a variety of surveying
instruments and electronic or mechanical instrumentation in the making and
recording of field measurements and observations designed to collect data
for physical/ biological science investigations. Only time actually spent
in the field can be credited when qualifying individuals under the field
party experience option.

*Sub-professional Experience —* Sub-professional experience is defined as
technical work performed in support of field or laboratory investigations
relating to the biological sciences, physical sciences, or closely related
disciplines which provided basic knowledge or skills in gathering,
recording, and assembling scientific or engineering data; using scientific
instruments to measure angles, degrees, weights, strengths, intensities,
etc.; setting up and operating test apparatus, and manipulating
quantitative data. Experience may include assisting professional employees
with such duties as calibrating and operating measuring instruments mixing
solutions, making chemical analyses, setting up and operating test
apparatus, and compiling and processing scientific data. Experience as a
laboratory mechanic or in a trade or craft may be credited as experience
when the work was performed in close association with physical or
biological scientists or other technical personnel and provided a good
working knowledge of appropriate scientific principles, methods, and
techniques.

*Professional Experience —* Professional work experience in the physical
and biological sciences may be credited in lieu of or in conjunction with
sub-professional experience as defined above.

*About this Position*

   - THIS IS A TEMPORARY EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION for which all qualified
   applicants, with or without Federal status may apply and be considered.
   Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status in the
   Federal service. Appointment will only be for the duration of the position,
   in this case, 1,039 hours/180 days or less.
   - Positions may offer rehire eligibility for subsequent appointments,
   provided the employee has not exceeded 1,039 hours or 180 days of work
   (whichever comes first) in a 12-month period and has achieved acceptable
   level of performance.
   - Temporary employees are covered by the Social Security Retirement
   system; annual and sick leave will be accrued.

Temporary appointees expected to work at least 130 hours per month for at
