Summary of Duties and Responsibilities


The department of Geological and Atmospheric Sciences seeks applicants for a Laboratory Equipment Specialist to be responsible for departmental and lab equipment including but not limited to SEM, Mass Spectrometer, Ice deformation (Ring Shear) device, Structural Geology shear strain tables, and various wet lab facilities.

Duties include developing operational procedures and training of faculty, staff and students on operation of new and existing equipment; designing and or devising new or modified equipment to improve the operation of lab equipment and facilities; supervising the set-up, maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment and facilities; and developing, implementing and supervising a safety program for all department laboratories and assisting in other laboratory operations activities.

Duties also include a minimum of 1-2 weeks at the Wyoming Field Station to help with operational maintenance and problem solving (computers, electrical system, equipment, etc.,).

The successful candidate will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills along with strong, hands-on, problem-solving capabilities. The candidate will also be a motivated self-starter with an ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a team made up of faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students and outside clientele.

Bachelor's degree and 1 year of related experience.

Experience with analytical (geochemical) equipment.

Experience assessing the condition and needs of specialized equipment (electronics, microprocessors and computer programs) and facilities to keep in safe working order.

Teaching experience with highly specialized technical and automated equipment.

Experience performing cost analysis to help determine whether to repair versus replace equipment.

Experience with electrical wiring diagrams/schematics, set-up and repair of machinery/equipment and facilities.

Degree in Geosciences or Engineering.
