Job Description

PNNL's Marine Sciences Laboratory is developing robust marine research
programs in Sustainable Environmental Systems focused on renewable ocean
energy, global climate change, ecological restoration, ecotoxicology and
marine biotechnology, and contaminant fate and effects. This position will
provide research support in the form of literature searches, analyzing
existing scientific findings and compiling knowledgeable syntheses,
preparing policy and technical position papers, developing work plans,
coordinating research projects and proposals with PNNL staff, developing
materials, agendas, and reports for meetings and workshops, working
collaboratively with scientists and engineers within PNNL and outside the
laboratory; and representing PNNL at meetings. The Marine Scientist will
work under the direction of a Senior Project Manager to enhance PNNL's
capabilities in the interface between science, policy, and resource
management.

This position will work with an interdisciplinary team of scientists and
engineers to contribute to a program of ocean energy development that
focuses on understanding the energy resources, potential environmental
effects, and pathways to deployment and operation of successful wave, tidal,
and wind energy devices and projects. The ocean energy team provides
extensive collection, analysis, and dissemination of information on effects
and potential end markets for marine energy and examines barriers to
development of these technologies.

Initially, the Marine Scientist will contribute to ongoing research efforts
and manage medium sized tasks, but will be expected to assume more
responsibility in task direction and project management. Will be required to
work independently, but closely coordinate activities with team members and
project managers, and be expected to lead small sized research teams of one
to five people.

Responsibilities include:

.         Produce high technical quality of research work products

.         Manage interdisciplinary project teams of peers and subordinates.

.         Participate in business development activities. May lead technical
section of small to medium proposals.

.         Lead and mentor junior staff.

This position may be located in either Sequim, WA, or Seattle, WA.

Minimum Qualifications

.         BS/BA with 5 years of experience, or MS/MA with 3 years of
experience, or PhD with 1 year of experience.

.         Experience working with marine stakeholders, which could include
state or federal government regulators or planners, researchers, or industry
staff.

.         Background in marine energy or other uses of the marine
environment.

.         Excellent oral and written skills.

Preferred Qualifications

.         MS or PhD degree in a marine field

.         Ability to work on several tasks concurrently.
