Purpose:

Dr. Sandra De Urioste-Stone, Assistant Professor in the School of Forest Resources at the University of Maine is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral research scholar (one-year appointment). The successful candidate will (1) work on a project to study human dimensions of global changes in the forest resources industry, and (2) teach one course per semester. The work relies on strong collaboration with industry stakeholders. The candidate will work as part of an interdisciplinary team of faculty and students. Position is open to social scientists that conduct qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis; experience with participatory techniques is particularly desired. The salary for this position is $44,000 per year.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
1.     Teach one undergraduate course per semester in the School of Forest Resources (e.g., Introduction to Tourism; Ecotourism; Sustainable Tourism Planning).
2.     Design and implement methodologies to collect primarily qualitative data to understand risk perceptions and adaptation strategies of forestry stakeholders.
3.     Maintain accurate records of research process and findings.
4.     Create database and analyze data using NVivo.
5.     Communicate research results to scientific community via preparing peer reviewed journal articles in collaboration with the research team, and preparing conference presentations.
6.     Mentor undergraduate students.
7.     Facilitate workshops to share results with stakeholders in Maine.
8.     Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications:
*        Ph.D. in Human Dimensions of Natural Resources, Human Dimensions of Climate Change, Conservation Social Sciences, Environmental Anthropology, or related fields required.
*        Prior experience with qualitative and quantitative applied social science research is required.
*        Hands-on experience developing and conducting qualitative research is required.
*        Capability with conducting qualitative data analysis is required.
*        Experience with developing and implementing social science surveys is highly desired.
*        Experience with conducting multivariate statistical analysis is desired.
*        Demonstrated excellent organizational, written and oral communication skills are required.
*        Interest/experience with undergraduate teaching is highly desiered.
*        Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment is required.
*        Applicants must be eligible to accept employment in the United States at the time the appointment is made.

Supervisory Responsibility: The successful candidate will be responsible for mentoring undergraduate students in area of expertise.



Work Environment: Work will take place at the University of Maine (Orono, ME, U.S.A.) and fieldwork in Maine. The employee will be expected to work collaboratively to develop methodologies and conduct social science research, responding flexibly and creatively to input from the Supervisor.



Work Year: Full-time, one fiscal year appointment (September 1, 2018-August 31, 2019).



Work Schedule: Normal UMaine business hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Due to the nature of the position, work beyond regular hours (to include evenings and weekends) will be necessary to meet the requirements of the position. The employee shall establish regular office hours and in consultation with the supervisor, adjust the work schedule as appropriate.



Position Type: Contingent of funding and successful performance.



Schedule for Evaluation: In the initial six months of employment in accordance with the UMPSA agreement.
