DESCRIPTION

The Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) at the University of California, Berkeley, seeks applicants for an Assistant Research Physicist position, specifically in the area of Mars aeronomy and/or space plasma physics, with an emphasis on science operations for and data analysis from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) Mars Scout mission. The goal of MAVEN is to determine the role that loss of atmospheric gas to space has played in changing the Martian climate through time. The Assistant Research Physicist will engage in independent and collaborative research with both SSL and outside personnel, attend and actively support scientific seminars, workshops, working team meetings and other venues for presentations of results and development of collaborative research relationships, vigorously pursue publication of research in peer reviewed journals and pursue additional funding opportunities consistent with existing and future research programs and goals.

The positions may be associated with one or more of the following instruments onboard MAVEN, fully or partially developed by our group: the Solar Wind Ion Analyzer (SWIA), the Solar Wind Electron Analyzer (SWEA), the Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) instrument, the SupraThermal and Thermal Ion Composition (STATIC) instrument and the Langmuir Probe and Waves (LPW) experiment.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent foreign degree in physics, astronomy, or a closely related field, and at least two years of postdoctoral experience in aeronomy and/or space plasma physics at the time of application.

Familiarity with the physics of the Mars ionosphere and Mars-solar wind interaction is desirable. Demonstrated analytical and programming skills also highly desirable. In-house data analysis software is written in IDL, so IDL experience is preferable.

The initial appointment will be full-time for two years, with a possibility of renewal. Salary will be commensurate with experience. The anticipated start date is December 2017. To apply, please go to the following link: https://aprecruit.berkeley.edu/apply/JPF01452. Applicants should submit Curriculum Vitae including list of publications, statement of research interests, and optional cover letter. Applicants should also request three reference letters. All letters will be treated as confidential per University of California policy and California state law. Please refer potential referees, including when letters are provided via a third party (i.e., dossier service or career center), to the UC Berkeley statement of confidentiality: http://apo.berkeley.edu/evalltr.html.

This position is open until filled. Please direct questions to Teri Mortimer at terimort at berkeley.edu<mailto:terimort at berkeley.edu>. SSL is interested in candidates who will contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education through their work. Women and minorities are particularly encouraged to apply.
