The Department of Biology at East Carolina University seeks to hire an Assistant or Associate Professor with expertise in Coupled Natural and Human Systems Modeling as applied to coastal ecosystems, to be based at the Coastal Studies Institute in Wanchese, NC, to begin August 13, 2018. The successful candidate will be expected to lead a vigorous, externally funded program; mentor graduate students; engage in university, community, and professional service; and teach at the graduate and possibly undergraduate levels. This position is part of ECU's Marine and Coastal Systems research cluster, one of eight new pan-university clusters focused on expanding research and engagement.



East Carolina University (www.ecu.edu<http://www.ecu.edu/>), a member of the 17-campus University of North Carolina System, is classified as a Doctoral/Research-Intensive University and enrolls around 29,000 students, with over 5,500 pursuing graduate and professional degrees. ECU is located in Greenville, NC (pop. 90,000), which lies ~80 miles east of Raleigh and a short distance to the Atlantic coast.



The Department of Biology (www.ecu.edu/biology)<http://www.ecu.edu/biology%29>, housed in the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences, is a broad department that emphasizes integrative approaches drawing from across the life sciences. We offer undergraduate majors in Biology and Biochemistry and graduate opportunities at both the MS and PhD levels. The Coastal Studies Institute (CSI), where this position will be housed, is located on Roanoke Island in Wanchese, NC (http://www.coastalstudiesinstitute.org)<http://www.coastalstudiesinstitute.org%29/>, on North Carolina's Outer Banks. CSI is an interdisciplinary coastal field laboratory with active research, education and outreach programs. It is currently undergoing significant growth.



Department of Biology resources include expertly staffed core facilities for molecular, genetic, genomic, and water chemistry analyses, a high-performance computing cluster, a greenhouse, a microscopy and imaging facility and multiple boats equipped for coastal research. Extensive opportunities for research collaboration exist within the Department, within CSI, and across the university, including with faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Engineering, College of Health and Human Performance and the Brody School of Medicine. Nearby marine stations and state and federal laboratories also provide opportunities for collaboration.

A Ph.D. in Biology or a closely related field (e.g., environmental science, marine science) is required along with training in modeling, and a scholarly record of achievements appropriate to appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. Current external research funding is required for appointment at the Associate level; a research program with clear promise of significant external funding is required for appointment at the Assistant level. Experience is required in interdisciplinary research and in modeling interactions between coastal and human systems. Qualifying degrees must be received at time of hiring from accredited institutions.
