We are planning to fill a postdoctoral position in the newly established
research team “*Tropical climate dynamics: past, present, future*” led by
Dr. Malte Stuecker (<https://www.iccp.ibs.re.kr/people/malte-stuecker>)
at the IBS Center for Climate Physics (ICCP), Pusan National University (<
http://iccp.ibs.re.kr>), South Korea.

The IBS Center for Climate Physics (ICCP), directed by Dr. Axel Timmermann,
is dedicated to advancing the understanding of natural climate variability,
man-made climate change and their impacts on the hydrological cycle,
regional processes, ice-sheets, and sea level. The ICCP is generously
funded through the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) (<http://ibs.re.kr>).

Applicants for this position should have a PhD in physical oceanography,
atmospheric science, climate dynamics, or a related field. Postdoctoral
Fellows are expected to have strong computational skills, a good
publication record, a high level of independence and creativity, and an
interest in working in an international and interdisciplinary research
environment. Our tropical climate research team studies large-scale climate
dynamics and modes of climate variability (e.g., ENSO and decadal
variability). For instance, we are interested in the question of which
temperature and precipitation patterns will emerge in response to
anthropogenic forcing and how climate feedbacks will respond. This is
contrasted to the dynamical response of the climate system to different
forcings in past climates. Furthermore, we plan to investigate the greater
role of tropical climate in the Earth system (such as its linkages with
high latitude climate and the marine carbon cycle). To address these
questions, we will utilize both high resolution coupled climate model
simulations and large ensemble experiments that are currently conducted on
our new 1 Pflop supercomputer.

Postdoctoral fellows will receive a competitive salary (50 million
KRW/year, which is approx. 45,000 USD/year), support for conference travel,
support for relocation, access to our new supercomputer, as well as
benefits (health and social insurance contributions) and incentives (up to
an additional 30% of the annual salary).

Employer: IBS Center for Climate Physics
Location: Pusan National University, Busan, South Korea
Education Level: PhD
Job type: Postdoctoral Fellow
Term: Full Time, 1 year initially, with strong possibility for renewal
Start date of position: as soon as possible

ICCP is located in Busan, the second largest city in South Korea and the
ninth largest port city in the world. Surrounded by ocean and mountains,
the city has a dramatic natural background, and the multitude of
neighborhoods in Busan each have a distinct character. From designer cafes
and casual bars to temples at the end of hiking trails, and good food at
every place imaginable, Busan has something for everyone. Also, Busan is an
international metropolis characterized by remarkably low living costs.

Please submit a cover letter, a short statement of your research interests,
curriculum vitae, the name of 2 references, and up to three publications to
Ms. U-Jeong Seo (<u_jeongs at pusan.ac.kr>). If you have any further questions
regarding this position, please contact Malte Stuecker (<
stuecker at pusan.ac.kr>) or Axel Timmermann (<timmermann at pusan.ac.kr> ). The
position remains open until filled.
