We are seeking a researcher in biogeochemistry, aqueous geochemistry or a related discipline, for a time-limited appointment between 1 February 2019 and 1 February 2020 at Uppsala University, Sweden.

Description of project: The project "Identifying Sources of Mercury in Arctic Rivers" (Formas 2017-00660) investigates the potential sources of mercury (Hg) transported to the Beaufort Sea by the Mackenzie River in Canada. Methods include isotopic characterization of Hg and carbon (C) in river water as well as hydrological modelling. The project is a collaboration between Uppsala University, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Stockholm University and Trent University (Canada).

Duties
The researcher will analyze hydrogeochemical data from the Mackenzie River basin. The main objective is to identify and quantify possible terrestrial sources of Hg transported in rivers across the basin (e.g.,: soils, permafrost, snowmelt). The information will be used to model C and Hg transfer to the Beaufort Sea and its marine food web at present and in response to future changes in climate and hydrology. The project seeks to anticipate how the effects of such changes might impact the recovery of Arctic marine ecosystems from decreasing global Hg emissions from anthropogenic sources. Duties may include some field work in Canada.

Requirements
PhD degree in biogeochemistry, aqueous geochemistry, hydrology, or a related discipline. Knowledge of Hg and C biogeochemistry, as well the capacity to evaluate isotopic data, are highly desirable. Fluency in English, both spoken and written, is necessary. The successful candidate should be able to work independently, and to contribute for a development of the project.

Additional qualifications
Experience with Geographic Information Systems and/or hydrological modelling are desirable.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all section
