Position Summary: The Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering
at the Gillings School of Global Public Health, University of North
Carolina, is seeking a dynamic and innovative educator to fill a teaching
faculty position. With the addition of this position, the Department aims
to advance its well-established BSPH undergraduate degree program. This
quantitative program has exceptional students and an incoming class of
approximately 25 students/year. The program is accredited through the
Council on Education for Public Health and provides students with skills
needed to be successful in practice and research. The curriculum is
designed to provide an understanding of health effects of environmental
contaminants, source-to-exposure linkages, exposure routes, risk assessment
and engineering and policy solutions. This is a renewable fixed-term
position that we wish to fill at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.

In addition to teaching two courses per semester, the new faculty member
will advise undergraduate majors and lead recruiting efforts (together with
student services staff). Teaching assignments may include: BSPH core
courses, development of an innovative “learning community” course to engage
UNC undergraduates in the process of discovery, and a capstone course. The
new faculty member will also contribute efforts to build community within
the major, and will engage in professional service activities commensurate
with rank and experience. The faculty filling the position will have the
benefit of a mentoring committee and a clearly defined criteria for
reappointment/promotion.

Educational Requirements: The successful candidate must have a PhD in
environmental health, chemistry, biology, toxicology, engineering, or a
related field relevant to environmental sciences or environmental
engineering.

Qualifications and Experience: The successful candidate will provide
evidence of high-quality teaching and strong communication skills. Subject
matter expertise in one or more of the following fields is preferred:
environmental sciences/health, exposure science, environmental health and
safety, risk assessment, global/local engineering or policy solutions, and
modeling for regulatory assessment and planning. Some experience in a
practice or research setting is also desirable.
