About ECMWF
ECMWF is both a research institute and a 24/7 operational service, producing and disseminating numerical weather predictions to its Member States. ECMWF carries out scientific and technical research directed to the improvement of its forecasts, collects and processes large amounts of observations, and manages a long-term archive of meteorological data. Satellite and in situ observations provide the information for up-to-date global analyses and climate reanalyses of the atmosphere, ocean and land surface.
For details, see www.ecmwf.int/<http://www.ecmwf.int/>
Aeolus is a European Space Agency (ESA) Earth Explorer mission, which was successfully launched on 22 August 2018 as part of the Living Planet Programme. This mission will demonstrate the capability of a space borne Doppler wind lidar to make accurate, globally-distributed measurements of wind vertical profiles in the troposphere and lower stratosphere (near surface to 30 km).
ECMWF has been entrusted to operate the Aeolus Dedicated Data Processing and Data Delivery (DAMI) Services on behalf of the European Space Agency. The Level-2 Meteorological Processing Facility (L2/Met PF) will be hosted and operated at ECMWF to deliver operational processing of Level-2B/C wind and auxiliary meteorological data products during the mission’s lifetime
Summary of the role
This post sits in the Observations Team, in the Production Section of the Forecast Department. The role will also be part of the multidisciplinary team delivering the DAMI services responsible for leveraging the ECMWF operational systems and infrastructures.
The Analyst will work on the acquisition, processing and dissemination of Aeolus observations and products, using tools and procedures consistent with ECMWF’s operational environment.
During the service start-up, i.e. within the first six months after satellite launch, it is expected that she or he will work in collaboration with other DAMI team members mainly on the technical consolidation of the L2/Met PF infrastructure, contributing to the finalisation of automatic alerting and reporting tools and to the tuning of acquisition, processing and monitoring facilities.
During the service operational phase, she or he will also provide support to L2/Met PF infrastructure maintenance activities, which will involve the development, testing, validation and integration through to deployment. The successful candidate will also be required to make contributions to the operational progress reports, as well as participating in progress meetings and service reviews, to coordinate DAMI problem tracking and incident management processes.
Main duties and key responsibilities

· Providing administration and maintenance of L2/Met PF infrastructure including anomaly tracking, incident management and development of monitoring tools
Providing service operational reporting and generation of technical documentation
· Liaising with ESA and other service providers contributing to Aeolus Payload Data Ground Segment (PDGS)
Supporting the team in other tasks related to the operational production systems, including on-call support when necessary
Personal attributes
Very good interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to work in a team and a multi-cultural environment
Ability to work under pressure
Good analytical and problem-solving skills with a proactive approach
Qualifications and experience required

Education

A university degree in computer science or a related subject, or equivalent is required.

Experience

Experience of working with scientific datasets in an operational or scientific context. A good knowledge of remote sensing/meteorological observations and data formats (BUFR, EEF) would be an advantage.
Programming experience with modern scripting languages, such as Python, in a UNIX computing environment with software versioning systems is required.
Experience in problem/incident management and software acceptance and validation activities.
Experience of working in an operational environment would be an advantage.
