Location: Boulder, CO

 

Type: Full-time

 

Position Term: 1-year term with possibility of extension

 

Relocation:

U.S. Citizenship, Permanent Residency, or other protected status under 8
U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3) is required for this position.  UCAR/NCAR will not

Who We Are:

Located in Boulder, Colorado, the National Center for Atmospheric Research
(NCAR) is one of the world's premier scientific institutions, with an
internationally recognized staff and research program dedicated to advancing
knowledge, providing community-based resources, and building human capacity
in the atmospheric and related sciences.

 

What You Will Do:

The CISL High Performance Computing Services Section (HSS) Technical
Writer/Editor assists in creating and maintaining HPC related documentation
on the HSS website using Google, Drupal, and Wiki, defines and maintains
organizational structures for documentation, identifies gaps and needs for
content, updates documentation in light of system changes and upgrades, and
ensures the overall quality of written materials and communications produced
by the HPC Services Section. The writer/editor organizes, researches,
writes, edits, and proofreads a wide variety of HPC-oriented technical
documentation and general information for CISL's shared computational
environment of high-performance computing systems, data and visualization
clusters, large-scale disk-based file systems, tape-based archive system,
and associated services.

 

Responsibilities:

.        Conceptualizes, writes, edits, and produces original computer
hardware and software documentation, collecting information from available
sources and appropriate CISL subject-matter experts to communicate
often-complex information to diverse audiences. Conducts background research
on technical or institutional topics. Produces documentation for purchase
and deployment of new systems according to project-defined schedules.

.        Editor and manager of CISL's documentation and related information.
Responsible for organizing, adding and integrating new content, and
maintaining the pages through ongoing system and environment changes.
Coordinates the contributions of CISL subject matter experts and works to
clarify and refine contributions by others.

.        Partners with HSS, CISL management and the UCAR Contracts Office to
draft, negotiate and administer subcontracts, purchase orders, lease
agreements, consulting agreements and other contractual instruments with
subcontractors/subrecipients and vendors in support of CISL HPC activities.
Tracks and updates NDAs on an on-going basis. Plans, schedules and
coordinates meetings with vendors.

.        Partners with HSS, CISL management and the UCAR Contracts Office to
prepare and review Requests for Information (RFIs), Requests for Quotes
(RFQs), and Requests for Proposals (RFPs) in support of CISL HSS staff for
procurements. Evaluates proposals and terms and conditions with HSS staff
and UCAR Contracts. Prepares documentation for justification of award for
the National Science Foundation (NSF).

.        Coordinates, contributes to, and provides editorial guidance for
user communication channels maintained by HSS, including the CISL web site,
Daily Bulletin, user notices issued through Notifier, etc. Supports and
contributes to defining the workflows for such. Serves as documentation
subject-matter expert for other CISL groups.

.        Provides coordination and support for other CISL and HSS tasks as
assigned.

 

What You Need:

Education and Years of Experience:

.        Bachelor's degree in journalism, technical writing, or related
field, and at least two years writing and/or editing experience or
equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

.        Demonstrated skill in technical communication, including writing
and editing. Thorough knowledge of the English language, including
semantics, punctuation, spelling, syntax, grammar, and effective
communication strategies.

.        Skill in explaining basic technical concepts clearly and succinctly
in language that is appropriate for varied audiences. Ability to organize
information for easy absorption.

.        Knowledge of electronic publishing media for the Web and emerging
interfaces, such as online content management systems, documentation
systems, and online information delivery systems, including the ability to
understand, compose, and edit basic HTML and Wiki markup; and to contribute
content to a Drupal-based content management system. Knowledge of and
sensitivity to Web design and accessibility, and the ability to assess its
quality.

.        Demonstrated ability to acquire and apply new skills sufficient to
complete assigned tasks.

.        Proficient in the use of general desktop software, such as
Microsoft Office, web browsers, and browser-based software.

.        Good oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability
to work as a contributing member in a team environment, working side by side
with all CISL groups, management, vendors, and technical support staff.

 

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

.        Skill in reviewing and analyzing terms and conditions of
contractual documents.

.        A basic knowledge of information technology environments.

.        Knowledge of basic computing technology, terminology, and
operation.
