Megadrought Postdoc

We seek a postdoctoral scientist to contribute to an NSF-funded
interdisciplinary program that focuses on documenting, understanding, and
predicting megadrought. The research design of this program spans
paleoclimatic, climate modeling, and climate applications approaches.
Although this position emphasizes the physical science of megadrought, the
overall project also highlights the societal dimensions. The successful
candidate will define a compelling and original sub-project that advances
one or more of the core questions of the overall project:
. What is the observed nature and dynamics of decadal-multidecadal drought?
. How well do Earth System models simulate observed decadal-multidecadal
drought?
. How do we combine observational and model-based perspectives to quantify
estimates of prolonged drought risk over the next few decades?

This multi-investigator project is a collaboration among scientists at the
University of Michigan, the University of Arizona, and the National Center
for Atmospheric Research. The position will be funded through the University
of Arizona and most likely located at the University of Michigan (Ann
Arbor). Salary commensurate with experience.

To apply, please submit a research project proposal of no more than 1500
words (you may include references and figures in addition to this limit),
describing how you would advance the goals of understanding and projecting
megadrought risk. Example approaches could include one or more of the
following: paleoclimate reconstruction and synthesis; Earth system model
experiments and/or evaluation; process-based studies in climate models that
are relevant to megadrought (e.g. land surface or ocean-atmosphere
dynamics). Your application should also include a letter of interest, a
complete CV, and contact information for three references. This position is
funded for one year with the potential to extend by another year and we
would like to fill the position with someone who can start as soon as
possible. Questions can be directed to Jonathan Overpeck (overpeck at umich.edu
<mailto:overpeck at umich.edu> ) or Julia Cole (colejul at umich.edu
<mailto:colejul at umich.edu> ).

Outstanding UA benefits include health, dental, vision, and life insurance;
paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays; UA/ASU/NAU tuition reduction for
the employee and qualified family members; access to UA recreation and
cultural activities; and more!
