Research Scientist

Job Purpose: Perform a variety of technical activities associated with the operation of a geochemistry lab, including instrument operation, sample preparation, data quality control, management of student research assistants, and compliance with lab safety guidelines.

Major Responsibilities:


  *   Prepare samples for geochemical analysis
  *   Operate and maintain lab's instrumentation (mass spectrometer, plasma analyzer, laser analyzers), after on-the-job training
  *   Conduct quality control of data
  *   Archive lab's data, metadata, and physical samples in appropriate spreadsheets and/or data repositories
  *   Ensure a safe working environment for lab personnel, including appropriate lab safety training
  *   Order lab supplies & file appropriate paperwork
Basic Qualifications:

  *   Education: Bachelor's Degree in science or engineering
  *   Work Experience:  One to two years job related experience preferred, but not necessary
  *   Certifications: N/A
  *   Skills: This job requires working knowledge of research lab equipment and support processes and practices. Includes skill in data organization, statistical analysis, and use of statistical and scientific computer applications. Requires familiarity with lab safety protocols. On-the-job training is provided to ensure that the employee has appropriate skillsets in place.

  *   Preferred Education: Master's Degree in science or engineering
  *   Preferred Work Experience:  Experience with analytical equipment and instrumentation
  *   Preferred Certifications: N/A
  *   Preferred Skills: Ability to place orders, process reimbursements and interface with vendors
Impact & Influence: This position will interact on a consistent basis with: academic and research faculty, postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and co-workers. This position will involve direct supervision of undergraduate students in their lab-based duties and tasks, with their safety being a key priority.
