The College of the Environment at the University of Washington seeks a
full-time research scientist to operate and manage an isotope ratio mass
spectrometry facility under the direction of Professors Paul Quay and
Gordon Holtgrieve. Typical projects include carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and
hydrogen isotope analysis of dissolved inorganic carbon, dissolved
gases, particulate organic matter, and compound-specific analysis of
lipids and amino acids using both dual inlet and continuous flow
methods. Core responsibilities will include instrument operation and
maintenance (two ThermoFisher 253s and a DELTA V isotope ratio mass
spectrometers, Agilent 5890 GC, Picarro CRDS, and Pfeiffer Prisma
quadrupole mass spectrometer), sample preparation, instrument
calibration, methodology development, purchasing lab consumables and
equipment, maintenance of lab records, training and supervising users
(mainly students), data processing, and quality control. There will be
opportunities to participate in field work and for professional growth
via participation in publications, conferences and methods development.

Required qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in geochemistry,
chemistry, experimental physics, earth sciences, or a related
discipline. The candidate should be organized, detail oriented,
independent and accustomed to working with multiple users of varying
skill levels. Experience with isotope ratio mass spectrometer operation
and sample preparation is required and previous experience with analytic
organic chemistry using gas chromatography is strongly preferred.  The
ability to master Matlab, R, and/or Python and applications like LabView
for data processing and instrument control is highly valued. We will
train the successful applicant on the specific instruments.

This is a one-year position with the strong likelihood of re-appointment
in subsequent years contingent on performance and funding (i.e., we are
filling a position held by one individual for the last 10 years). The
position will be based in the School of Oceanography. Applications will
be reviewed for a start date that could be as early as June 1, 2018.
Please use the online system to submit 1) a resume and 2) a cover letter
highlighting relevant technical experience, evidence of management
capabilities, why the position fits your career goals and contact
information for three references (total of 2 page max). The University
of Washington is part of a thriving research community in the
cosmopolitan city of Seattle, which is set between the majestic Cascades
and Puget Sound, and is an affirmative action and equal opportunity
employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for
employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual
orientation, gender identity, gender expression, national origin, age,
protected veteran or disabled status, or genetic information.
