JOB OPPORTUNITY: EARTH SCIENCES
Leech Lake Tribal College in Cass Lake,
Minnesota, seeks a Research and
Community Coordinator in the general
area of Earth system science. This is a
new position and the successful candidate
will be supporting the continued
development of an integrated program of
information, education, and recruitment
of American Indian students that is built
around a community-inspired and
community-led natural history STEM
club –Azhegiiwe Bagwajaya’ii (“ he/she
returns to wilderness” in Ojibwe).
The program and the club will emphasize tutoring,
internships, engagement, student support, lectures, and a
workshop series, which includes Native speakers from the
greater community and academia. Azhegiiwe Bagwajaya’ii
will actively participate in the development and
maintenance of a long-term environmental monitoring
network as the focus of the connection between culture
and tradition and natural resources. The program of
environmental monitoring will include air, streams, lakes,
wetlands, soil, forests, plants, and wildlife. The
coordinator will supervise students and interested
community members in data collection.
LLTC is a small college within the Chippewa National
Forest near the headwaters of Mississippi River. Located
on the edge of the coniferous and the northern mixed
hardwood forests, the area is full of clear lakes, beautiful
rivers and tamarack bogs. This beautiful natural area is
also internationally known for its wide range of outdoor
activities including great fishing, hunting, hiking, xcountry
