GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation of public
law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90%) and the
state of Schleswig-Holstein (10%) and is one of the internationally
leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. Currently GEOMAR
disposes over an annual budget of approx. 72 million Euro and has approx.
950 employees.



The research unit “Marine Biogeochemical Modelling” of the research
division “Marine Biogeochemistry” is offering a position for a



Scientist/PostDoc



Earliest potential start date is August 1st 2017. The position is funded
by the DFG-project “Towards a deeper Understanding of Cyanobacteria Blooms
in the Baltic Sea”. The position is anticipated to cover a period of 3
years.



Job Description

We seek for candidates with strong interest in the Ecosystem of the Baltic
Sea. The project aims to identify environmental drivers of cyanobacterial
blooms in the Baltic Sea by combining statistical analysis of observations
with output from a numerical coupled ocean-circulation biogeochemical
model.





Qualification

Applicants must have a university degree equivalent to a PhD in Marine
Biology, Oceanography or a related subject. The applicant should be
familiar with coastal ocean processes and be able to work on his/her own
initiative. Very good English language skills are mandatory and at least
basic knowledge in statistic is a requisite. Applicants with a working
knowledge of the ecosystem of the Baltic Sea, good programming skills
(e.g., Matlab, R, Fortran) and/or experience in using numerical models to
address scientific questions are preferred. Experience with numerical
ocean-circulation models of the Baltic (e.g. with MOMBA) is a bonus.



The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class 13
TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a fixed-term,
full-time position. Part-time employment is possible.
