RESEARCH MANAGER – LUQUILLO FOREST DYNAMICS PLOT

The Department of Environmental Sciences of the University of Puerto Rico
is seeking a
Research Manager to assist scientists conducting research in the Luquillo
Forest Dynamics Plot
(LFDP) in Puerto Rico. The LFDP is a 16 ha gridded forest plot where all
saplings, shrubs, and
trees are identified, mapped, and measured every five years to address
questions of forest
diversity and management. Seedling censuses in small plots dispersed
throughout the LFDP are
conducted annually and additional census plots extend the LFDP into areas
of younger forest. The LFDP is part of a network of large forest plots
coordinated by the Center for Tropical Science
(www.ctfs.si.edu) and is a keystone project of the Luquillo Long-Term
Ecological Research
Program (luq.lternet.edu).

We seek a self-motivated individual with a Bachelor of Science or Masters
of Science in Biology, Ecology, Forestry, or Environmental Science with an
interest in rainforest plant ecology and taxonomy, and the ability to
collect data in a difficult forest environment. Required skills include
knowledge of ecology and forestry issues, and experience in plant
identification. The
candidate should be comfortable with word processing, spreadsheet,
graphics, and data
management software. Preferred skills include experience with programming
in R, GIS packages
such as ArcGIS, Paradox, and the ability to assist with manuscript
preparation. People
management skills are important, as the candidate will work with students
and scientists, and lead
teams of volunteers to collect data. A working knowledge of Spanish is
desirable.

The position is based at El Verde Field Station, Rio Grande, Puerto Rico
