The Department of Soil and Crop Sciences is focused on education, research,
and outreach to solve the world’s most pressing food production issues and
crucial matters about Earth, its ecosystems, and their services. Our
faculty and staff apply research-based solutions to benefit Colorado and
the world. We offer academic programs to prepare students to address
national and global crop production, sustainability, and environmental
quality challenges such as waste management, water quality, and reclamation
of drastically disturbed lands. There are numerous opportunities for
students to be involved in cutting edge research related to global food
production and ecosystem function and protection.

Position Summary

Colorado State University College of Agricultural Sciences invites
applications and encourages nominations for Department Head and Professor
in Soil and Crop Sciences. The Department Head leads 25 talented faculty
members, more than 50 research and professional staff, 45 graduate students
and nearly 90 undergraduate students. The department’s annual base budget
exceeds $2.75 million with total expenditures greater than $11 million. The
department’s operations include programs of excellence in soil science,
agroecosystems management and plant breeding/genetics.

The Department Head position is a 12-month appointment focused on
programmatic and administrative leadership in scholarship, instruction,
Extension and stakeholder engagement. Responsibilities include leading the
development of the department’s strategic plan and its implementation. The
Department Head is also responsible for performance reviews of faculty and
administrative staff, as well as the formation and administration of the
department’s budget. The Department Head works collaboratively with a broad
range of constituencies including food and agricultural commodity groups,
CSU Extension, private sector organizations, NGOs and civil societies in
order to steward programs that are innovative and impactful. The Department
Head ensures excellence in scholarship, instruction, engagement, diversity
and inclusion. Opportunities exist for the successful candidate to continue
an active research and/or teaching program, but the focus of this
appointment is its administrative duties.
Required Job Qualifications

The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to achieve complex
goals and objectives, which is evidence of high-level leadership,
communication, and management skills. Required qualifications include:

• An earned PhD in crop science, soil science, agronomy or closely related
field
• Sustained record of scholarly excellence necessary for meeting
qualifications as a Professor with tenure in the Department of Soil and
Crop Sciences at CSU
• Demonstrated exceptional leadership and interpersonal skills
• Demonstrated ability to mentor and guide more junior professionals (e.g.,
faculty) in their career pathways and development.
• Experience in collaborative priority setting and decision making
• A clear vision of a land grant university’s future role in soil and crop
sciences as it relates to instruction, research, Extension and stakeholder
engagement.
• Demonstrated ability to adaptively manage resources in order to take
advantage of opportunities with creativity and innovation
• Ability to interact with agricultural and natural resource stakeholders
in developing research and industry initiatives of local, national and
global importance
• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills

Preferred qualifications include:
• Demonstrated commitment to the principles and strength of diversity in
people and programs as indicated by an ability to effectively relate to
diverse backgrounds, including an understanding and respect for cultural,
ethnic, and individual differences, successful international and cultural
experiences and collaborations
• Demonstrated excellence with global research and engagement programs
• Demonstrated experience in successfully allocating, directing and
monitoring large-scale, annual budgets
• Evidence of working collaboratively with partners including: industry
(e.g., agribusiness and/or commodity organizations); local, state or
national government agencies (e.g., USDAagencies); and non-governmental
entities (e.g., land trusts, public and private foundations)
• Experience in interdisciplinary research including multi-state and/or
multi-agency efforts
• Evidence of leading and/or significant contributions to institutional
development such as fundraising, collaborations and contracts.
