Hi all!

Please help spread the word!! Remember, REUs are told by NSF that we have to bring in the majority of our students from schools where research opportunities are limited, and we’re especially seeking students who are considering pursuing graduate degrees and/or a research career but haven’t had a chance to try research yet.

Thanks!!

I am excited to let you know that the National Weather Center Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program has already been funded for summer 2017! We have an exciting program that pairs undergraduate students with research mentors to conduct a project in the wide-ranging meteorology, climate, radar engineering, and interdisciplinary topics being researched here. Students are paid a stipend, have free housing, a travel allowance to/from Norman, OK, and travel allowance to present their work at the national conference that best suits them.

For our new grant we have as partners the Radar Innovations Laboratory and the South Central Climate Science Center, which opens new research lines in addition to our traditional severe weather, weather modeling, lightning, statistics, and other projects with mentors from the NOAA and University of Oklahoma organizations housed in the National Weather Center building.

In addition to research, I help the students learn more about the many careers in and around meteorology to help them explore and find career options that might suit them well. We hold several workshops and have one-on-one mentoring to help students build skills needed to succeed.

Students interested in the program are required to submit an application, two reference letters, and their official college transcript(s). To be eligible for the program students must be enrolled in a 2- or 4-year college degree program and be a US citizen or permanent resident of the US. Applications from women and minorities are particularly encouraged. The University of Oklahoma is an equal opportunity institution.

All applications and related materials for the 2017 REU are due by February 8, 2017 for full consideration, though references will have one additional week to submit letters.
