(1) Post-doc in Satellite Cloud and Precipitation Data Analysis

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will analyze data from NASA’s A-Train satellites and work toward the design of next-generation satellite missions. The appointee will use CloudSat, CALIPSO, AMSR, and MODIS data to examine the incidence of convective and stratiform cloud structures in frontal regions. She/he will also use output from an ensemble of convection resolving simulations to assess the ability of future observing systems to measure key convective quantities including latent heating and determine the capabilities those systems to detect trends in cloud properties. She/he will further contribute to algorithm development activities for the CloudSat project.

Qualifications

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences, or a closely related field. The successful candidate should be highly self-motivated, and have excellent oral and written communication skills. She/he should have a strong background in analysis of satellite data and in the use of mesoscale and/or cloud-scale numerical models, especially for the analysis of the structure, physics, and dynamics of clouds and precipitation. Particular expertise in cloud radar remote sensing is desirable.  Candidates who have received their PhD within the past five years since the date of their application are eligible. Postdoctoral Scholar positions are awarded for a minimum of one-year period and may be renewed up to a maximum duration of three years.

(2) Post-doc in Data Assimilation

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will conduct data assimilation (DA) and observing system simulation experiments (OSSEs) for the design of next-generation satellite missions. The appointee will use the NASA Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS) model, along with the NCEP gridpoint statistical interpolation (GSI) data assimilation system to conduct research on the impact of future observing systems on estimates of various geophysical quantities. These may include, but not be limited to: tropospheric winds, aerosol, and trace gasses.

Qualifications

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences, applied mathematics, statistics or a closely related field. The successful candidate should be highly self-motivated, and have excellent oral and written communication skills. She/he should have a strong background in the use of regional and/or global models in high performance computing environments. Expertise in satellite data assimilation is also strongly desired. Candidates who have received their PhD within the past five years since the date of their application are eligible. Postdoctoral Scholar positions are awarded for a minimum of one-year period and may be renewed up to a maximum duration of three years.
