SERVIR Regional Science Associate (x3) for Eastern & Southern Africa,
Amazonia, and Lower Mekong

 

We are currently seeking three (3) research associates to provide support
for SERVIR science activities at its regional hubs in (1) Eastern & Southern
Africa, (2) Amazonia, and (3) Lower Mekong. These three positions will be
located at the National Space Science & Technology Center in Huntsville,
Alabama but will support activities domestically and internationally,
including travel.  The positions could begin as early as October 2017.

 

SERVIR is a NASA and USAID joint project that enables the use of Earth
observations and geospatial technologies for improved societal
decision-making in key regions. SERVIR Science Coordination Office (SCO) at
NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama is collaborating
with the University of Alabama in Huntsville to provide SERVIR hub direct
science support, and science and technical coordination. 

 

SERVIR is active in East Africa, West Africa, Hindu Kush Himalaya, Southeast
Asia, and is growing to other parts of the world, including Amazonia. SERVIR
hub institutions provide a key interface between the needs of SERVIR regions
and the potential use of Earth observations and geospatial technologies and
also provide a critical technical support to regional and national
governmental institutions.

 

 

Responsibilities

.         Provide assistance to the Regional Science Coordination Lead(s)

.         Develop products (tools, applications, datasets) using Geospatial
Information Systems (GIS)/remote sensing analysis

.         Coordinate a variety of GIS datasets, including downloads,
processing, maintenance and archiving

.         Distill the following into succinct messages and/or one page
reports

o   Organize regional scientific articles and reports

o   Organize regional publications from the SERVIR Science Coordination
Office and Applied Sciences Team (AST)

.         Develop story maps to communicate geospatial analysis and thematic
services provided to SERVIR regions

.         Support development of SERVIR reporting materials (highlights,
annual report, etc.)

.         Develop and provide training materials for the global network

.         Develop/co-develop scientific publication(s)

.         Attend domestic and international scientific meetings and
workshops

.         Test products and tools created by the Geospatial Information
Technology (GIT) team, Hubs and AST

.         Support disaster response

 

Key Requirements and Education

.         Minimum Bachelor's of Science in Earth science, environmental
science, or similar field; however a Master's of Science is desired

.         Experience designing and conducting applied research projects that
use satellite images and geospatial data in the field of Earth and
environmental sciences

.         Strong experience in programming and/or scripting in open source
applications for geospatial analysis

.         Experience coordinating among peers and management in both
face-to-face and virtual or remote environments

.         Strong experience with GIS and remote sensing analyses

.         Capacity to understand and learn about different cultures

.         Organizational skills

.         Aptitude for coordination

.         Works well on a team

.         Strong communication skills

.         Written and spoken Spanish fluency is a requirement for the
SERVIR-Amazonia position
