We’re specifically looking for candidates fluent in the climate science and impacts assessment world but who know, use, and, ideally, develop in xarray, but strong pandas programmers are also welcome to apply.

The candidate would be joining the Climate Impact Lab in leading an open source development effort to build a bias-correction and downscaling package in xarray, python’s N-dimensional, labeled data science library. This work will be led by Michael Delgado<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Frhg.com%2Fpeople%2Fmichael-delgado&data=02%7C01%7Crobert.kopp%40rutgers.edu%7C24c9dda4f4024d87634c08d4e1262e83%7Cb92d2b234d35447093ff69aca6632ffe%7C1%7C0%7C636381001635741845&sdata=jKESAb%2BCsLNheniM9h78lA9FABCjUP%2F445GLG%2BS5F2E%3D&reserved=0> and Justin Simcock<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Frhg.com%2Fpeople%2Fjustin-simcock&data=02%7C01%7Crobert.kopp%40rutgers.edu%7C24c9dda4f4024d87634c08d4e1262e83%7Cb92d2b234d35447093ff69aca6632ffe%7C1%7C0%7C636381001635741845&sdata=c2ozOWmMgDcX1jAssa7rt1HlR7Hq0wUUBqmWFq%2FwdjE%3D&reserved=0> at the Rhodium Group, with contributions and guidance from Joe Hamman<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fstaff.ucar.edu%2Fusers%2Fjhamman&data=02%7C01%7Crobert.kopp%40rutgers.edu%7C24c9dda4f4024d87634c08d4e1262e83%7Cb92d2b234d35447093ff69aca6632ffe%7C1%7C0%7C636381001635741845&sdata=AnuZWmKrBly1EqBmm4EMFEbE3UHlKzT%2FuBuPexxqAOs%3D&reserved=0> (NCAR) and Jiacan Yuan<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bobkopp.net%2Flab%2F%23jiacan-yuan&data=02%7C01%7Crobert.kopp%40rutgers.edu%7C24c9dda4f4024d87634c08d4e1262e83%7Cb92d2b234d35447093ff69aca6632ffe%7C1%7C0%7C636381001635741845&sdata=ZrR%2Bzrmes8tVG%2Fbsx1kUoiB8pJU6%2FakGOVrd7wQ%2BtzA%3D&reserved=0> and Robert Kopp<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bobkopp.net%2F&data=02%7C01%7Crobert.kopp%40rutgers.edu%7C24c9dda4f4024d87634c08d4e1262e83%7Cb92d2b234d35447093ff69aca6632ffe%7C1%7C0%7C636381001635741845&sdata=IodsCK5iZpZw9H3HgFm6b2lGzcwz9TkL74VlfqYPpoM%3D&reserved=0> at Rutgers University.

With this package, we intend to develop and make public high-resolution data sets consistent with CMIP5 and CMIP6 model outputs for use in impact assessment, both by Climate Impact Lab researchers and by the general public, using existing and novel downscaling methods. All are invited to contribute, request features, and follow the progress of this effort at our repository<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgithub.com%2FClimateImpactLab%2Fdownscale&data=02%7C01%7Crobert.kopp%40rutgers.edu%7C24c9dda4f4024d87634c08d4e1262e83%7Cb92d2b234d35447093ff69aca6632ffe%7C1%7C0%7C636381001635741845&sdata=MuKN4kJyz9P2TJOSFDRQFpWaEoQcGxIjz8u6PVIc5TA%3D&reserved=0> on github.

We are mostly interested in candidates who can work full time out of our offices (in Oakland, CA), but we would also be interested in seeing outstanding candidates who could work remote and/or half time. The hire would get the chance to work with a small engineering team on huge data sets with enormous computing resources. They would also work directly with the economists and climate scientists who direct our larger research effort. If the hire is a good fit, they would have a place on the team for the long term, but candidates interested in a shorter-term (1 year) position are welcome too.
