Olaf College invite applications for a full-time, jointly-appointed tenure
track position in Earth Science at the Assistant Professor level to begin
in August 15, 2017.

The successful candidate will contribute to curricular and scholarly
activity in both departments, and will be expected to teach 1) core courses
at all levels in the physics major, and 2) Geophysics, Global Climate
Change, and core interdisciplinary and special topics courses in
environmental studies. We are particularly interested in applicants who
will contribute to the departments’ commitment to increasing access and
opportunities for populations which are currently under-represented in
areas such as Physics, Earth Science, and Environmental Studies. Start-up
funds are available.

*Qualifications. *Candidates must

● hold a Ph.D. in an Earth Science field by September 1, 2017

● show potential for excellence in teaching in a liberal arts setting
and for developing a research program amenable to participation by
undergraduate students

● have the ability to teach at all levels in the undergraduate
physics and environmental studies curricula

Additional desirable qualifications include postdoctoral research
experience and/or previous teaching experience. We are particularly
interested in candidates who can develop courses that serve/connect both
departments.

*Responsibilities. *The successful candidate will have responsibilities in
three main areas.

● *Teaching. *Teach core courses at all levels in the physics and
environmental studies majors. The normal teaching load is six
course-equivalents per year, divided evenly between the two departments.

● *Scholarship. *Develop a research program with the potential to
attract external funding and suitable for participation by undergraduate
students, including summer research opportunities that attract interest
from majors in both departments.

● *Service. *Serve as an academic advisor to undergraduate students
and enhance organizational effectiveness and community life through service
to the departments and the college.

*Application Procedure. *Applicants must submit materials online at

application consists of

● a cover letter introducing yourself and describing your interest in
and qualifications for the position.

● a current curriculum vitae.

● a statement on teaching which includes your teaching interests,
ideas about pedagogical approaches, and experience you may have had (about
2 pages).

● a statement describing the research you propose to carry out as a
new St. Olaf faculty member (about 3-5 pages). You should assume the
possibility of startup funds in the first two years sufficient to enable
the development of a project with the potential to attract external funding.

● official or unofficial graduate and undergraduate transcripts.

● names and email addresses for three professional references who
can speak to your abilities in classroom teaching and scholarship.
(recommendation letters will be solicited from references by the search
committee after an initial round of screening).

Evaluation of completed applications will begin on January 20, 2017. Our
intention is to conduct finalist interviews in March and fill the position
by early April. Candidates who are invited to campus for an interview will
also be asked to submit a written 1-2 page reflection on the College’s
mission.
