Job Description
The Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change Division (http://www.pnnl.gov/atmospheric) at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral research associate for the research area of computational climate modeling. The successful applicant will collaborate with researchers at PNNL and other national laboratories to

  1.  develop and implement test strategies to verify the numerical algorithms used in the parameterization schemes in a global climate model, with an initial focus on the aerosol life cycle, and
  2.  develop and evaluate methods for testing the reproducibility of the numerical solutions.
It will be essential for the candidate to commit to developing robust, clean, and maintainable testing codes and scripts, and creating detailed documentation of their functionalities Teamwork and strong communication skills for engaging with project teams at PNNL and other national laboratories will also be very important.

Minimum Requirements

  1.  Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences, computational physics/chemistry, geosciences, computer science, or applied mathematics from an accredited university within the past 5 years;
  2.  Basic knowledge in a physical science;
  3.  Basic understanding of numerical modeling techniques used in Earth sciences or computational physics/chemistry;
  4.  Fluency in Fortran programing and Python/shell scripting;
  5.  Experience with data analysis and visualization software;
  6.  Excellent writing skill as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications or technical reports;
  7.  Strong communication skills;
  8.  Strong team player with the willingness and ability to work independently.
Desirable Qualifications

  1.  Basic knowledge in atmospheric physics or chemistry;
  2.  Demonstrated ability to modify, compile, and run complex weather, climate, or chemical transport models, or fluid dynamics codes;
  3.  Experience with high-performance computing environments;
  4.  Demonstrated experience in using version control tools like Git or SVN.
