JOB DESCRIPTION

The Department of Geography in the College of Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University seeks an outstanding candidate for the Max Thomas professorship in meteorology/climatology, to commence autumn semester 2017. The successful candidate will be a scholar with demonstrated ability to sustain a strong, externally funded research program, advise students and teach courses such as dynamics, synoptic meteorology, weather forecasting and related themes in support of our atmospheric sciences program (BS-MS-PhD). This position is partially funded by the Max Thomas endowment to be known as the Max Thomas Professor in an appropriate specialty.

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

This position requires a collaborative researcher capable of developing a research program based on the innovative use of the techniques and models in atmospheric science. There is a strong expectation that the scholar will engage in quantitative research and collaborate broadly across disciplines, departments and colleges. Successful applicants must provide evidence of a competitive record of publication and the ability to conduct and fund an active research program involving one or more of the following: weather forecasting, extreme weather and climate, climate system modeling, model output downscaling, multi-platform satellite observation synthesis, and data mining of climate and/or weather information. Other desirable research and teaching specialties might include ecological modeling; climate change adaptation or response; and remote sensing of land surfaces at regional to global scales.

Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences, meteorology, physical geography or a closely related field is required. All applicants are expected to have very strong and fundable research programs and to contribute to both graduate and undergraduate supervision and instruction. Appointment is contingent on the university’s verification of credentials and other information required by law and/or university policies, including but not limited to a criminal background check.
