[ES_JOBS_NET] Fwd: Available Postdoc: Spatial modeling of ecosystem services in an agriculturally impacted stream

Benjamin Crosby crosby at isu.edu
Sun Jun 26 22:06:20 MDT 2016

*Postdoctoral Research Associate, Department of Geosciences, Idaho State
University*

*Purpose*: The successful applicant will use spatial modeling skills to
evaluate the effectiveness of soil conservation and stream restoration
practices at improving both biophysical measures and social perceptions of
water quality. This research into coupled human and natural systems will
be collaborative with social scientists, ecologists, hydrologists,
modelers, stakeholders and other members of the Idaho EPSCoR MILES project
<https://www.idahoecosystems.org/>. As such, the applicant should be
comfortable thinking across multiple disciplines.

*Responsibilities*:

   1. Compare recent investments in soil conservation and stream
restoration against records of water quality and stakeholder satisfaction
(75% of time). This comparison will be made using a spatially explicit,
socio-ecological model that integrates three decades of conservation
activities with over a decade of high frequency water quality
measurements. The model will be used to evaluate which types of
conservation investments have resulted in positive, neutral or negative
changes in habitat, water quality and stakeholder perceptions of the
river. The findings will be used maximize the effectiveness of future
   conservation/restoration investments.
   2. The applicant will also help mentor 2 M.S. graduate students studying
the geomorphic processes that generate and distribute sediment through the
   watershed (15% of the time).
   3. The applicant will communicate results and implications of this work
to MILES collaborators, local stakeholders, and environmental agencies, and
participate in MILES workforce development activities (10%).

*Qualifications*: The successful applicant will, at minimum, have completed
a PhD in the past five years in an environmental science field (geology,
environmental science, environmental engineering, etc.) with experience in
spatial analysis and water quality data. Preferred qualifications include
experience in statistical, numerical or spatial modeling. Applicants with
experience in studies of coupled socio-ecological systems are highly sought.

*Application*: Please submit the following documents via our online
application system
<https://isu.csod.com/ats/careersite/JobDetails.aspx?id=332>:

   - CV, Cover letter and 3 professional references
   - Position will remain open until filled.
