Graduate Assistantship in Earth & Environmental Sciences
Land Ocean Atmosphere Interactions Lab, CCNY/CUNY
Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University

A Ph.D. or M.Sc. Graduate Assistantship in Earth & Environmental Sciences is available for motivated students interested in research on biogeochemical cycles and biological processes in wetlands, estuaries, and the coastal ocean. The assistantship provides competitive monthly stipend, tuition, health benefits, and coverage of research and related travel expenses.

The successful applicant will have an opportunity to participate in NSF and NASA funded research that integrates rich field datasets, remote-sensing observations, process-focused experiments, and advanced modeling tools to test key research hypotheses that are critical for understanding carbon sources, sinks and transformations across terrestrial-aquatic interfaces, and impacts of tidal wetland ecosystems on coastal carbon fluxes and budgets. The student will join an interdisciplinary, multi-institutional team of graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and senior scientists at the City University of New York, Columbia University Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory, NASA Goddard, and NOAA CREST.

Qualifications: We are searching for highly motivated students with a BSc. or M.Sc. in Earth and Environmental Sciences, Oceanography, Biochemistry or closely related discipline, strong analytical skills, and strong research interest in aquatic biogeochemistry and optics. Experience on programming (e.g., IDL, Matlab, Python), field data collection methods, and/or remote-sensing data analysis are desired but not required.

Contact and application information: Please e-mail (i) statement of interest, (ii) a curriculum vitae, (iii) unofficial transcript(s), and (iv) contact information of two references to Dr. Maria Tzortziou (mtzortziou at ccny.cuny.edu<mailto:mtzortziou at ccny.cuny.edu> or mt3123 at columbia.edu<mailto:mt3123 at columbia.edu>) and Dr. Joaquim Goes (jig at ldeo.columbia.edu<mailto:jig at ldeo.columbia.edu>). The start date is Fall 2016 to Fall 2017 depending upon student admittance into the Graduate Program. Review of applications will begin immediately.
