The American Association for the Advancement of Science seeks a Project Director for the Center for Public Engagement with Science and Technology. The Project Director plans, directs, and implements activities of project(s) including managing financial and staff resources in order to raise awareness of and participation in the programs of the Center for Public Engagement with Science and Technology. This position reports to the Director of Meetings and Public Engagement.

Major duties and responsibilities:

Conceptualizes content and plans and implements activities of the Center for Public Engagement with Science at AAAS, including the following projects: Leshner Leadership Institute, Communicating Science workshops and online resources, Family Science Days at the AAAS Annual Meeting, and other grant-funded and new initiatives in public engagement
Supervises 4 professional and 1 support staff, including assigning work, monitoring work progress, providing training, and conducting performance reviews
Oversees daily operations and develops and monitors project budgets
Conceptualizes and organizes science communication and public engagement-focused workshops, events, and meetings
Provides talks, oversees marketing, and conducts other outreach activities to explain Center’s work and increase awareness and understanding of issues
In collaboration with Director of Meetings and Public Engagement, develops and implements plans for public engagement community and capacity building
Stays abreast of research and issues in science communication and public engagement and serves as advocate for program issues at professional, government, and scientific society meetings
Develops proposals for program funding from federal and private sector organizations
Reviews and evaluates effectiveness of projects and activities
Minimum qualifications:

Position requires advanced university or college training to a Master’s degree in a field of specification related to the work performed; or a Bachelor’s degree and an equivalent combination of education and experience (Bachelor’s degree minimum)
Five to ten years experience in progressively responsible positions in program development and management. Two to three years experience supervising others
Demonstrated knowledge of project issues and research; project management skills including grant proposal development, budget management, and personnel management; ability to use independent judgment to make decisions and guide project effectively and efficiently
Excellent written, verbal, visual, and online communication skills required
