PhD position in New Zealand

Cloud properties and occurrence over the Southern Ocean are subject to
substantial biases in the current generation of climate models. The
Cloud and Aerosols project in the New Zealand Deep South National
Science Challenge programme aims to make dedicated in situ measurements
and use existing data to improve the representation of clouds and
cloud-aerosol coupling in the New Zealand Earth System Model. A
fully-funded PhD position entitled ‘In-situ and remote sensing
measurements of Southern Ocean Cloud and Aerosol Properties’ is
currently available. This studentship will be jointly supported by Dr.
Mike Harvey (NIWA, Wellington) and Dr. Adrian McDonald (University of
Canterbury, Christchurch).

The student selected will initially be based in Wellington at the NIWA
Greta point facility and be involved in the development and testing of
hardware that will allow the vertical structure and aerosol content of
the lowest kilometre of the atmosphere to be measured. Later work may
require the student to move to Christchurch dependent on progress and
the needs of the observational programme. This project offers
significant opportunities for travel linked to fieldwork with plans for
testing in New Zealand and a number of ship deployments in the Southern
Ocean. An interest in instrumentation and an understanding of remote
sensing techniques would be very desirable.

We are seeking highly qualified and motivated scientists. Candidates are
expected to have a BSc Honours or Masters degree in Physics or an
equivalent, when they start their Ph.D. project. Some experience with
atmospheric physics and aerosol sampling will be an advantage. The
willingness to cooperate in a geographically distributed team is also
required. We also expect that you are able to communicate your results
in oral and written form in very good English. Applicants should submit
an academic transcript, a CV and the name of two academic referees
before the deadline.

Deadline to apply: Wednesday 14 March 2016 at 17:00 (NZST)

Applications and enquiries to <Mike.Harvey at niwa.co.nz> or
<adrian.mcdonald at canterbury.ac.nz>.
