The Department of Ecosystem Science and Sustainability at Colorado State University is seeking Assistant Professor in Water Quality. We seek applications from candidates who have expertise in water quality laboratory analyses, field sampling techniques, water quality regulations, and the effects of land use and land management on water quality. Teaching expectations include lecture and lab-based undergraduate courses in land use and water quality. This position teaches WR418 and WR419 (Land Use and Water Quality and Water Quality Lab) and contributes to other undergraduate and graduate courses in Watershed Science and Ecosystem Science and Sustainability. This position advises undergraduate and graduate students in the department, conducts research related to water quality and contributes to service and outreach activities.

The Ecosystem Science and Sustainability department is closely associated with the Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory. We are recognized for interdisciplinary research in ecosystem function and ecosystem sustainability, such as sustainability of water, food, and energy systems from technological, social-ecological, and modeling perspectives. ESS faculty whose research lies at the interface of biophysical and social sciences have created open and flexible research and education programs with issues of sustainability as the core focus.

The Department offers a B.S. in Ecosystem Science and Sustainability and a B.S. Watershed Science as well as an M.S. in Watershed Science and a Masters in Greenhouse Gas Management and Accounting. Faculty members may also direct graduate students in the interdisciplinary Graduate Degree Program in Ecology and the Watershed concentration of the Earth Science PhD. The Department has in excess of 300 undergraduate students and 75 graduate students.

The mission of the Department of Ecosystem Science and Sustainability at Colorado State University is to understand the function of ecosystems and watersheds across space and over time. We assess ecosystem sustainability by examining interactions within and between natural and human systems in the context of current stresses such as changing climate, species introductions, land-use change, and increased demand for water. The department will use state of the art technologies and approaches to provide quality education to future scientists, educators and decision makers, conduct cutting edge interdisciplinary research, and deliver culturally relevant outreach programs that empower our students and the general public locally, nationally, and internationally.

Required Qualifications:

1.       A PhD in a related field completed by start date (anticipated to be August 16, 2017).

2.       Experience with field and laboratory-based water quality measurements

Preferred Qualifications:

1.       Experience in applied land use and water quality research

2.       Expertise in water chemistry

3.       Strong publication record

4.       Demonstrated ability or potential for generating external funding

5.       Commitment to excellence in teaching

6.       Ability to communicate scientific knowledge to practitioners, managers, and policy makers

7.       Experience and interest in working on interdisciplinary teams

Salary: Commensurate with Experience.
