The Academy is an independent not for profit organisation made up of around
500 leading Australian researchers. It recognises outstanding contributions
to science and research, advises government, promotes science education and
public understanding of science, informs evidence-based science policy, and
fosters international scientific relations.

The Project Officer will work with the Academy’s Science Policy and
Projects section to coordinate the activities of Science in Australia
Gender Equity (SAGE), supporting the management of an Australian pilot of
the Athena SWAN Charter on gender equity in science.

SAGE-Pilot aims to improve gender equity in Australian science research
organisations by encouraging them to engage in an incentive-based
performance evaluation and quality improvement process. The Pilot is based
on the successful Athena SWAN Charter established in 2005 in the UK and run
by the independent charity the Equality Challenge Unit (ECU). The SAGE
Forum workshop hosted by the Australian Academy of Science in November 2014
established broad support for the initiative within the Australian science
sector. The Academy undertook to run an Australian pilot of the Athena
SWAN program in partnership with the Australian Academy of Technological
Sciences and Engineering and with assistance from the ECU. The Academy will
also support the preparatory work required to establish SAGE as an
independent body within the next few years.
