CIRES/PSDProfessional Research Assistant

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) 
at the University of Colorado, Boulder has an opening for a Professional 
Research Assistant to develop and test next-generation data assimilation 
and ensemble-prediction capabilities for the National Oceanic and 
Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) global numerical weather prediction 
models. This work will be performed in collaboration with colleagues at 
NOAA’s Earth System Research Laboratory/Physical Sciences Division 
(ESRL/PSD), the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), and the 
National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP). The position would 
begin in the Fall of 2013.
Duties will include:
• Development of improved treatments of model uncertainty and sampling 
error within the ensemble prediction and data assimilation systems;
• Testing new methods for utilizing ensemble-based background-error 
covariance estimates within the operationalNOAAGlobal Statistical 
Interpolation variational data assimilation system;
• Developing interfaces between new global weather prediction models and 
the data assimilation system;
• Publishing articles in peer-reviewed journals describing the research 
results.

The position will be filled as a Professional Research Assistant at the 
University of Colorado Boulder and will be eligible for employee 
benefits, including 22 days of vacation (for a 100% position) per year.

Minimum Qualifications 	

Master’s degree in atmospheric science or related discipline, a 
background in atmospheric data assimilation and ensemble prediction.
• Ability to work independently and with a multi-disciplinary research 
team, with excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Fortran 95 programming experience required, and familiarity with the 
Python, GrADS, and/orIDLprogramming languages desirable.
