Employment is with The Research Foundation for The State University of New York, a private, nonprofit, educational corporation that administers sponsored program activity for the University at Albany.
The New York State (NYS) Mesonet is seeking a talented and highly motivated system administrator to join our team. The individual selected for this position will join an organization whose systems ingest, process, archive, and disseminate data from a number of sources, including complex weather station networks. The successful applicant will set up, maintain, and troubleshoot computers, software, storage systems and network connections in a 24x7 operational environment, and will serve as a technical resource for the NYS Mesonet. This individual will engage internal and external stakeholders to determine needs and assist with troubleshooting and resolution of issues on both server and desktop platforms. As a member of our operations team, this individual will be part of our on-call staff and will help maintain maximum availability of our data and services.
Minimum Qualifications: Good communication and interpersonal skills; Strong troubleshooting skills; Linux server system administration from the command line; Advanced knowledge of IP networking - routing, VPN setup, firewalls; Advanced knowledge of designing and implementing fault-tolerant systems and services; Administration of equipment used by office staff - Windows, printers, laptops, etc.; Able to work with minimal supervision when given broad instructions or guidelines; Anticipates, identifies, and works to resolve problems independently or collaboratively; Initiates planning, coordinating, and prioritizes to solve problems.
Educational Requirements: A Bachelor's Degree from a college or university accredited by the U.S Dept. of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization and at least 2 years of experience in a computer systems-related field OR an Associate's Degree or 60 credit hours in a computer systems-related field and at least 4 years of experience in a related activity.

Preferred Qualifications: Ability to manage and organize terabyte-scale data archives; Basic knowledge of server backups and log management; Basic knowledge of Meteorology and National Weather Service products; Configuration of mobile systems such as iOS (iPhone/iPad) and Android; Basic knowledge of radio - Cell broadband, WiFi, Amateur Radio.
Salary Range: $55,000 - $65,000 DOE
