Subject: Postdoc: Boreal Landscape Carbon Dynamics and Exchanges, Sweden

The Department of Forest Ecology and Management=20
(http://www.slu.se/en/departments/forest-ecology-management/)=20
conducts research and education in both basic and=20
applied science in the areas of Vegetation=20
Ecology, Soil Science and Forest Management. The=20
major research focus is on the boreal landscape,=20
including peatlands, forests and surface waters,=20
but we have activities also in other biomes. The=20
current position is in Soil=20
Science/Biogeochemistry. In a recent evaluation=20
(2009) of the university the Soil Science/Soil=20
Biogeochemistry group was ranked among the top=20
seven out of a total of 130 groups at the=20
university. The department has about 85 members=20
of staff of which 12 are professors. Research=20
areas include plant-soil interactions, surface=20
water hydrogeochemistry, soil chemistry, soil=20
biology, biosphere-atmosphere exchange, forest=20
history, forest management, forest regeneration,=20
plant population and community ecology. The=20
department has modern technical facilities, close=20
collaboration with several state-of-the-art=20
technical platforms at Ume=E5 University, and=20
access to unique long-term forest ecosystem=20
experiments and other field sites.

We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral=20
Researcher with focus on: Boreal Landscape Carbon Dynamics and Exchanges

Project and Tasks
The postdoc will investigate the carbon balance=20
of a boreal landscape in Northern Sweden. For=20
this project, the postdoc will use a unique set=20
up that integrates the well-established SITES=20
research infrastructure of the Krycklan catchment=20
with the ICOS-Svartberget tall tower flux station=20
providing data of all terrestrial and aquatic C=20
fluxes over a 68 km2 managed forest catchment.=20
Combined with >500 forest inventory plots, 16=20
long-term monitored streams, high-resolution=20
Lidar scans and an advanced hydrology model,=20
these state-of-the-art research tools provide=20
exceptional resources for investigating forest C=20
dynamics, budgets and its underlying drivers=20
spanning from the plot to the landscape scale.
The successful candidate will be mainly=20
responsible for processing and interpreting=20
eddy-covariance data and for publishing findings=20
in relevant high-rank scientific journals.=20
Additional opportunities include integrating=20
tower flux data with closed chamber, climate and forest inventory data.

The postdoc location is at the Forestry Faculty=20
of the Swedish University of Agricultural=20
Sciences (SLU), Department of Forest Ecology &=20
Management, in Ume=E5, Sweden. The field work will=20
be carried out around the ICOS Svartberget flux=20
station=20
<http://www.icos-sweden.se/station_svartberget.html%29=20>
which includes eddy covariance and meteorological=20
measurements on a 150m tall tower located within=20
the Krycklan Catchment=20
(http://www.slu.se/Krycklan) and Svartberget=20
Experimental Forests=20
