*Extended Application Deadline*: 11/13/2015

Title

Managing Director, Center for Aerosol Impacts on Climate and the Environment

Overview

The Center for Aerosol Impacts on Climate and the Environment (CAICE) is a
National Science Foundation Center for Chemical Innovation. The mission of
CAICE is to transform our ability to accurately predict the impact of
aerosols on climate and the environment by bringing real-world chemical
complexity into the laboratory. To accomplish this task, CAICE has
assembled a team of scientists in atmospheric, physical, and analytical
chemistry, chemical biology, as well as chemical, biological, and physical
oceanography from eight institutions across the United States, along works
with a number of domestic and international academic collaborators and
industrial partners. In addition to conducting innovative chemical
research, we are dedicated to improving science education and outreach for
better public understanding of both chemistry and climate.

Position Overview

The Managing Director (MD) is a critical member at the hub of many Center
activities and supports both its research and educational missions. The
incumbent reports to, and works in close partnership with, the
Director/Principal Investigator (Prof. Kimberly Prather) and the Management
Team to administer this large, technically complex, and continuously
evolving research center from its headquarters at the University of
California, San Diego. The MD serves as manager and central administrator
for the Center, acts as liaison between CAICE and NSF, and facilitates
communication between members of the Center. The ability to understand,
and/or the willingness and ability to learn, the basic scientific concepts
that CAICE research explores is a key element of a successful candidate;
therefore, a working knowledge of general scientific principles in
chemistry and/or environmental science are highly preferred. The CAICE
Managing Director has the opportunity to use and develop their scientific
and administrative skills through regular interaction with the equivalent
personnel in 8 other Centers for Chemical Innovation, ongoing and emerging
partnerships with the chemical industry, and a variety of leading experts
in chemistry and environmental sciences.

Specific responsibilities include

   -

Prioritization of both administrative and scientific decision-making for
the CAICE Management Team and Executive Council
   -

   Financial management and budgeting
   -

   Facility and resource support
   -

   Developing and maintaining industrial partnerships
   -

Scientific proposal and report preparation, grant administration and
   coordination with sub-awardees
   -

A leadership role within a diverse group of researchers and support staff
   -

Coordination and planning of CAICE meetings and activities
   -

   General administration and resource allocation

The position is located within the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry
at UC San Diego, the lead institution of CAICE.

Special Conditions

Ability and willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends

Ability to travel to national and regional meetings

Ability and willingness to become familiar with the scientific research
within the Center
