M.Sc or Ph.D Student: Atmospheric Reactive Nitrogen Inputs and Cycling in
Boreal Forest Ecosystems at Memorial University, St. John's, Newfoundland
and Labrador, Canada

A Ph.D. or M.Sc. graduate student assistantship is available for a
determined and motivated student interested in biogeochemical cycling
between atmospheric and terrestrial reactive nitrogen reservoirs. The
assistantship is available as part of a provincially funded project through
the Centre for Forestry Science and Innovation. This work is part of an
ongoing project at the Newfoundland and Labrador Boreal Ecosystem
Latitudinal Transect in collaboration with natural resources personnel in
provincial and federal government, international researchers, and Memorial
faculty in the departments of Earth Science and Chemistry. The funded
project will combine laboratory and field sampling strategies to synthesize
better understanding of exchange processes of gases and particles at the
atmosphere-biosphere interface for reactive nitrogen species, such as
nitrogen oxides (NO2 + NO), ammonia (NH3) and nitric acid (HNO3) and their
particulate counterparts. Applicants with experience in field sample
collection, analytical method development, and use of Igor Pro are
preferred. Background training in analytical chemistry, biogeochemistry, or
atmospheric processes will be important. Consideration of students seeking a
M.Sc. will be made where a strong background in environmental chemistry is
demonstrated. Applicants should be willing and able to conduct field
research at remote study sites for weeks at a time.

This assistantship will develop students' experience in experimental design
of field and laboratory-based projects through training in method
development, instrument design and construction, field sample collection and
remote system data acquisition, and analytical instrumentation expertise.
Students will also develop data interpretation and communication skills
through research group meetings, conference presentations, and manuscript
preparation.

This assistantship is available as early as May 1, 2015 through the
Department of Earth Science, or the Department of Chemistry, or the Ph.D.
program in Environmental Sciences at Memorial University. Memorial is the
largest university in Atlantic Canada, offering a diverse set of
undergraduate and graduate programs to approximately 18 000 students.
Memorial provides a distinctive and stimulating environment for learning in
St. John's, a very safe, friendly city with great historical charm, a
vibrant cultural life, and easy access to a wide range of outdoor
activities.
