*Post-doctoral position announcement: Life cycle Assessment of
biomass-biofuel production system*

*Project Description*: The Center for Agroforestry is seeking a
Postdoctoral Fellow to assist with developing life cycle analyses to
evaluate the social, environmental and economic impacts in relation to the
production performance of a biomass-biofuel production system. The study
area will be defined based on the vision of the Mississippi/Missouri River
Advanced Biomass/Biofuels Consortium (MRABC). The selected candidate will
work with a dynamic team of researchers associated with the Consortium, the
Center for Agroforestry and the Bioengineering Department at the University
of Missouri. At a minimum the selected applicant will develop a working LCA
model that will incorporate all possible biomass materials of interest
within the study area – including site preparation, cultivation, harvest;
all relevant biomass processing options, including optimization for a
variety of end products (e.g., ethanol, butanol); and logistics for
collection and transportation of biomass and finished fuels. Through
previous efforts the MRABC has collected data related to biomass
production, biofuel quality, production economics, nitrogen loss, carbon
sequestration, microbial dynamics, GHG emissions, and biodiversity of these
cropping systems and compared with row crop agricultural systems, pastures
and natural forests to facilitate this site-specific LCA.

The applicant is guaranteed funding for 1 year from the hire date.
Additional funding will be pursued and contingent upon performance.

*Desired Qualifications*: Candidate must have completed a Ph.D. in an
engineering or closely related discipline at the time of appointment.
Previous training and experience completing life cycle assessments and the
GREET model are highly desirable. In lieu of this, training in systems
analysis or optimization will be considered.

*Application Information*: Interested applicants should send a cover
letter, CV, 1-2 relevant publications, and names and contact information
for at least 2 references to Dr. Christine Costello costelloc at missouri.edu.
We will begin reviewing applications on March 1 and will accept
applications until the position is filled.

*Additional information*: The Mississippi/Missouri River Advanced
Biomass/Biofuels Consortium (MRABC), formed in 2010 with a Mizzou Advantage
networking grant, represents a world-class cluster of public and private
partnersalong the MS/MO River Corridor. The goal of the MRABC is to lower
the commercialization barriers for advanced biofuels through development of
low-cost feedstocks, efficient conversion technologies and optimized
logistics systems. MRABC has been successful in attracting federal and
private funding and launching “Tiger Energy Solutions LLC”, a start-up
company based in Columbia, MO in the past three years. It also has gained
national and international attention for its vision to create a biofuel
corridor along the Mississippi River corridor using many of the strategic
advantages provided by both the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. Enterprise,
the nation’s leading car rental company, has committed funds in support of
MRABC’s mission through its endowment at the University of Missouri.
