*Graduate Research Fellowship in Hydrologic Sciences or Geological Sciences
at Desert Research Institute and University of Nevada Reno with focus on
luminescence and processes in fluvial geomorphology*

A three year graduate research fellowship is available for a Ph.D.
candidate in either Hydrologic or Geological Sciences at the University of
Nevada, Reno beginning in the fall term of 2016. Research will focus on the
intersection of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating techniques,
sediment transport, and hydrology under the direction of Amanda Keen-Zebert
and Rina Schumer at the Desert Research Institute. One hypothesis the
student will test is that bleaching of the luminescence signal in fluvial
sediment is systematically related to the depositional context (discharge;
distance travelled in a watershed or stream, etc.) such that an OSL
bleaching statistic can be used as a paleoenvironmental proxy. The
applicant should have a background in earth sciences with an undergraduate
or graduate degree in geology, hydrology, physics, or associated field.
Strong quantitative and laboratory skills are desired. Previous experience
with luminescence would be beneficial, but is not required. The DRI
Luminescence Laboratory (DRILL) is a fully equipped luminescence
laboratory; for more information on capabilities and equipment, see
http://www.dri.edu/luminescence-lab.

Financial support includes a monthly stipend; funds for field work,
laboratory analyses, and conference travel; as well as a tuition waiver and
health insurance. The appointment will initially be for three years, with a
possibility of renewal. Candidates need to apply for graduate admission
on-line (http://www.unr.edu/grad/admissions) and submit all application
materials to the Graduate Program of Hydrologic Sciences (
http://www.hydro.unr.edu/) or the Department of Geological Sciences and
Engineering (http://www.unr.edu/geology).

Please contact Dr. Rina Schumer (*rina at dri.edu <rina at dri.edu>*) or Dr.
Amanda Keen-Zebert (*akz at dri.edu <akz at dri.edu>*) for more details about the
position.
