Hi,

I am seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join the Environmental & Water Resources Eng. group in the Department of Civil, Infrastructure and Environmental Engineering at George Mason University (Fairfax, VA).

The student will conduct research in the disciplines of hydrology and remote sensing. Specifically, (s)he will be involved with a project titled “Optimal Precipitation Estimation for Land Surface Modeling” and funded by the NOAA Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (http://www.jcsda.noaa.gov/). This project proposes a new method to improve land surface model skills by optimally merging precipitation estimates from different data sources to produce the best forcing precipitation estimate that minimizes the land surface simulation errors.

The prospective student should be passionate and committed, have strong analytical and communication skills, possess excellent Fortran programming skills, has background in optimization, land surface modeling, and data assimilation.

If interested, please contact Dr. Viviana Maggioni at vmaggion at gmu.edu. More information can be found athttps://volgenau.gmu.edu/how-to-apply and http://civil.gmu.edu/graduate/. The application deadline is 19 October 2015. Start date: January 2016.

All the best,

Viviana
