Advanced Applications Engineer

The Environmental and Climate Sciences Department of Brookhaven National Lab has an Advanced Applications Engineer position open in its Data Management and Software Engineering Group.  The responsibilities of the position include designing, maintaining, and improving databases, and database and web application tools, containing information about scientific data collected for the DOE Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Climate Research Facility.  This encompasses scientific data analysis and software development as well.  Additionally a critical component of the position will require assigning metadata for the ARM Program to facilitate automated data processing, data documentation, data discovery, data retrieval, and analysis.  The highly qualified individual will be self-motivated, able to communicate clearly (both written and oral), possess strong organizational skills, and enjoy working in a group setting in an open and cooperative manner.  The individual will possess at least five years experience in database design, relational databases (e.g. PostGres, Sybase), web services,  SQL, and/or scientific data analysis.  Experience in software and database development, preferably on Unix/Linux systems, is required.  A bachelor's degree in computer science, information science, library science, or the physical sciences is the minimum educational requirement, though a Master's degree is highly preferred.  Additional desired skills include knowledge of Python, R, PHP, Perl, Java, XML, ArcGIS, REST, and SOAP.  Interest in atmospheric (cloud, aerosol, precipitation) instrumentation, and prior experience with large scientific datasets are also preferred.
