PhD Student Positions - Environmental Boundary Layers and Renewable Energy

The Environmental Fluid Mechanics and Renewable Energy Laboratory of the IIHR-Hydroscience & Engineering at The University of Iowa has openings for exceptional graduate students to work on research in the area of renewable energy and environmental fluid mechanics. The goal is to improve understanding and prediction of complex environmental flows related to wind and hydrokinetic energy as well as ecosystem-atmosphere interactions. Research in our group involves both experimental (LDV and PIV) and computational (WRF, OpenFOAM, LES) methods. Qualified candidates should have a degree in engineering or applied physics and mathematics with good scientific programming and communication skills. We are seeking students with a background in either experimental fluid mechanics or computational fluid dynamics. Preference will be given to students having experience with MATLAB, LabVIEW, LDV or FORTRAN/C++.

Students admitted to the program will be appointed to a half-time graduate student assistantship with a competitive salary and full tuition support. Students will join the IIHR-Hydroscience & Engineering, a world class institute known for interdisciplinary research and education in environmental fluid mechanics, hydrology, and water resources engineering. As a student of IIHR, she/he will have access to an exceptional range of resources, including laboratories, instrumentation and equipment, mechanical and electrical shops, 3D Printers, High Performance Computing, etc.

Prospective students should visit the EFRE lab website for more information at http://www.iihr.uiowa.edu/efre/ and contact Prof. Corey Markfort (corey-markfort at uiowa.edu<mailto:corey-markfort at uiowa.edu>). Please include a cover letter discussing your research interests and relevant experience, and a Résumé or CV. Qualified students will be encouraged to apply to the Graduate College at the University of Iowa for admission consideration in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (http://www.uiowa.edu/admissions/graduate/apply/index.html).
