Assistant Professor of Groundwater Hydrology
The University of Washington Tacoma (UW Tacoma) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Groundwater Hydrology in the Division of Science and Mathematics in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences (IAS). This is a full-time position with a nine-month service period. The successful candidate will develop important and relevant sponsored research and innovative teaching that addresses rapidly changing environmental issues and search for theoretical and/or applied solutions to environmental problems.  Appropriate research areas include groundwater hydrology, hydrogeology, groundwater/surface water interactions, subsurface geomorphology, groundwater biogeochemistry, water resource management and climate change, and other related fields.  This position will contribute to a new M.S. in Environmental Science as well as existing undergraduate degrees in Environmental Studies (B.A.) and Environmental Science (B.S.).  This position enters at an exciting time at UW Tacoma as we start our first graduate degree in the natural sciences, as we expand our undergraduate degree offerings, and as we have just completed hires in IAS in allied fields such as those for the new University of Washington Freshwater Initiative which will create the UW Collaborative Innovation Network in Freshwater Resources.
We are especially interested in candidates who will work collaboratively with other faculty in the environmental sciences and mathematics in the Division, as well as build connections with relevant faculty in other programs at the University of Washington and scientists and policy makers in local, state and federal natural resource agencies.  The successful candidate will be expected to work with diverse student populations, involve students in faculty research and field-based experiences, build community connections and service learning opportunities, and integrate new pedagogical techniques and technologies into teaching/learning. The candidate will create and offer courses at both the graduate and undergraduate level in areas related to hydrology, which may include surface water and groundwater hydrology, biogeochemistry, water resources, climate change, hydrologic modeling, geomorphology, interdisciplinary core courses in the M.S. and B.S. programs, and other subjects in the candidate’s area of expertise. The position begins September 2015, requires an earned doctorate or foreign equivalent in an appropriate field at the time of appointment, and is contingent on funding. A candidate in the final stages of his/her dissertation would be appointed on an acting basis.
