What You Will Do

We are seeking an experienced research technologist who has extensive expertise in experimental research and proven leadership abilities that can contribute to a wide variety of our team's domestic and international projects. Domestic and foreign travel is required to operate and manage climate research facilities. Communication, coordination, collaboration, and working with Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) management, climate scientists, and ARM Instrument Mentors are essential to successfully accomplish research projects. Work is conducted with on-site technical staff, worldwide based technical resources, and the LANL FIDO, the LANL Field Instrument Deployments and Operations team, and resources to ensure instrumentation is achieving a high rate of data return. ARM developed databases and web based systems are used to communicate with ARM personnel such as ARM Instrument mentors, ARM management, ARM Data Management Facility, and other technical resources as needed. A main function of the selected candidate's job will be operating the ARM Mobile Aerosol Observing System (MAOS) which is deployed at different locations around the globe for collecting climate measurements. The MAOS is currently deployed in Brazil.



This position will be filled at either the Research Technologist 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate.  Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.


Research Technologist 1

The successful candidate will be required to:

  *   operate, maintain, and repair scientific instrumentation.
  *   utilize computer software packages to generate spreadsheets and other methods to track materials and instruments at multiple ARM sites.
  *   write status and close-out reports, utilize computers and software to control instruments and collect data, design and build experimental hardware, participate in field campaigns;
  *   set up and test scientific equipment  and write, edit, and track technical and safety documentation.
  *   oversee and coordinate operations, maintenance, and repair of large-scale scientific instrumentation such as radar and LIDAR systems.
  *   produce detailed drawings, sketches, and schematics as well as other documentation of complex research instrumentation.
  *   work with various personnel within the ARM organization, and excellent communication is required in order to deploy, operate, maintain, and repair instrumentation located in foreign and domestic locations.

Research Technologist 2
In addition to the duties outlined above, the Research Technologist 2 will be required to:

  *   lead teams to plan and coordinate large-scale field deployments in foreign and domestic locations.
  *   develop and oversee contract scope of work, and oversee subcontract personnel in the field.
  *   provide technical oversight and effectively direct technical support resources.
  *   be responsible for initiation, design, construction, and deployment.
  *   oversee a research platform consisting of two shipping containers and 20+ instruments.
  *   coordinate operations at foreign locations with subcontract staff on site.
  *   create and oversee schedules, budgets, operations, and safety documentation and compliance.

ARM developed databases and web based systems are used to communicate with ARM personnel such as ARM Instrument mentors, ARM management, ARM Data Management Facility, and other technical resources as needed. A main function of the selected candidate's job will be performing Site Operations Manager duties of the Eastern North Atlantic climate research site.
This position will be filled at either the Research Technologist 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate.  Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Research Technologist 1
As part of the FIDO Team of EES-14, the successful candidate will be required to operate, maintain, and repair scientific instrumentation.  The successful candidate will also be required to utilize computer software packages to generate spreadsheets and other methods to track materials and instruments at multiple ARM sites. The work involves:  writing status and close-out reports, utilization of computers and software to control instruments and collect data, designing and building experimental hardware, participating in field campaigns, setting up and testing scientific equipment, and the writing, editing, and tracking technical and safety documentation.  Additional responsibilities include oversight and coordination of operations, maintenance, and repair of large-scale scientific instrumentation such as radar and Lidar systems.  Applicants must be able to produce detailed drawings, sketches, and schematics as well as other documentation of complex research instrumentation.  The selected candidate will be working with various personnel within the ARM organization, and excellent communication is required in order to deploy, operate, maintain, and repair instrumentation located in foreign and domestic locations.

Research Technologist 2
In addition to the duties outlined above, the Research Technologist 2 will be required to lead teams to plan and coordinate large-scale field deployments in foreign and domestic locations.  This higher level position will also be required to develop and oversee contract scope of work, and oversee subcontract personnel in the field.  In addition, the Research Technologist 2 will provide technical oversight and effectively direct technical support resources.  The Technologist 2 will be responsible for coordinating operations at foreign locations with subcontract staff on site.







Additional Details:
No Clearance:  Position does not require a security clearance.  Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

With an annual budget of 14 million dollars, the Research Technologist 1 / 2 will play an integral role in ensuring that the FIDO office meets Division and ARM project expectations.
