The Atmospheric Modeling and Support Section of the Air Quality Planning
and Science Division has an open position for an Air Resources Engineer or
Air Pollution Specialist who will be assigned a variety of the following
types of responsibilities : 1) producing, generally assessing, and
providing quality assurance of emission inputs and supporting data used for
air quality models; 2) assessing, testing, and improving emission model
components; 3) conducting GIS-based analyses using emissions,
meteorological, and air quality data; 4) project coordination, reviewing
contract deliverables, and managing contracts; and 5) summarizing and
presenting project results or technical findings to all levels of

The section is responsible for preparing spatially, temporally, and
size-resolved emission inventories, as well as conducting air quality
modeling studies and providing technical support using sound science for
statewide regulatory and policy programs. The section works with and
supports a broad range of internal and external scientists, engineers, and
policymakers. The section is comprised of engineers and scientists who use
state-of-science computer models, computer systems, and computer software
(including programming and scripting with application/development
software). The duties of the section broadly fall into the following areas:
1) the development of quality-assured gridded emission inventories for air
quality modeling; 2) coordination with other sections and air quality
districts on the development of emission targets for State Implementation
Plans; and 3) development of metrics and procedures to assess the emission
inventories and input parameters for meteorological and air quality models.

Due to the needs of the section that are associated with this specific
position, the most competitive candidates will have: 1) a strong science or
engineering background; 2) excellent communication skills (both verbal and
written); 3) experience with Linux or Unix operative systems, including

hands-on experience preparing inputs for air quality or emissions models;
experience with data analysis tools that can be used to quality assure very
large datasets similar to air quality model inputs and outputs; previous
experience writing command line executable scripts with Python, Perl, SQL
database languages, or R; and familiarity with GIS software.

Air Pollution Specialists and qualified candidates in other classifications
are encouraged to apply.

Applicants will be screened and only the most qualified candidates will be
