CIRES/GSD Research Associate: Developmental Testbed Center

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES)
at the University of Colorado Boulder is seeking a Research Associate
(RA). The RA will work at the Forecast Applications Branch (FAB) of the
Global Systems Division (GSD) of the Earth System Research Laboratory
(ESRL).

Background: The Forecast Applications Branch (FAB) of the Global Systems
Division (GSD) of the Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) is engaged
in cutting-edge research and development aimed at improved data
assimilation, numerical modeling, and ensemble forecasting methods for
the prediction of high impact weather events on fine time and spatial
scales. FAB is seeking a candidate with extensive experience in
Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) techniques with strong background in
ensemble forecasting and possibly data assimilation, and a desire to
become a member of a dynamic research team. The newly developed methods,
if successful, will find their use in various applications including
heavy precipitation, tropical cyclone, aviation, and severe weather
forecasting.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will contribute to achieving
GSD’s research and development objectives in a number of areas, including:
• Support research to operations transition activities under the
Developmental Testbed Center (DTC) project. Build, test, and evaluate
prototypes of new NWP data assimilation, hurricane, and ensemble
forecasting systems with external and internal collaborators. Provide
code management and assistance to external collaborators.
• Contribute to the development of advanced NWP methods
• Support other NWP-related projects as needed
