Fall Intern, Public Affairs

American Geophysical Union
Washington, DC

The world's largest organization of Earth and space scientists-the American Geophysical Union (AGU)-is seeking a science policy intern to work for approximately 13 weeks this Fall starting on 8 September at AGU's headquarters in Washington, D.C. AGU publishes 20 scientific journals and runs several scientific meetings; the largest of them, the annual Fall Meeting in San Francisco, draws more than 20,000 participants.

This intern will work in the Public Affairs Department (science policy) with a primary focus of attending congressional hearings and briefings on Earth and space science topics, running the department's social media presence, and helping plan and execute events that connect scientists and legislators. The intern will gain skills in working with policy makers; learn about current science legislation; experience being in the center of science policy progress in Washington, DC; and will be an integral part of a small and supportive team within the organization.

Minimum Qualifications: At least two years of coursework towards a Bachelor's degree in Earth or space sciences and a willingness to relocate to Washington D.C. area for the internship at your own expense are required. A Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. in Earth or space science is a plus. Ability to prioritize assignments, use standard procedures and processes to make decisions, apply effective verbal, non-verbal, and written communication methods, operate standard office equipment, and work independently on various projects and/or with limited supervision is needed. It's a plus to have experience with social media, science policy, and science communication, but not necessary.

Dates of internship: 13 weeks, from 8 September to 5 December, but exact dates are flexible. This is a paid internship (for salary information, please contact AGU Human Resources). Please submit your application, including a cover letter, by 4 August, via our online portal: https://rew12.ultipro.com/AME1056/JobBoard/JobDetails.aspx?__ID=*6B480C5099E5884F.
