Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is a
Swiss-based
and internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH
domain (Swiss
Federal Institute of Science and Technology). It is committed to the
ecologically, economically
and socially responsible management of water resources and aquatic
ecosystems.

The Department of Surface Waters Research and Management (Surf) has a
vacancy for a

PhD position: Environmental impact of pumped storage on lakes

Pumped-storage hydropower plants are considered to be an important
stabilizing factor in
the future Swiss energy grid following the energy strategy 2050 of the
Swiss government,
where a large part of the electrical energy is expected to be supplied from
intermittent new
renewable sources. This PhD project is part of the environmental impact
assessment for
the extension of an existing pumped-storage power plant in Switzerland. The
extension is
expected to significantly increase the water exchange between the two
connected lakes.
The aim of the study is to assess the effects of different pumped-storage
scenarios on temperature,
stratification, particle dynamics, nutrients, and other relevant processes
in the two
connected lakes. The study includes field and lab work and numerical
modelling. The detailed
project plan will be elaborated in collaboration with the owner of the
hydropower plant
and the cantonal agencies.

The prospective candidate should hold a master degree in environmental
engineering or
environmental sciences with a strong background in mathematics/physics; a
good command
of English in speaking and writing is required and knowledge of German is
advantageous
for the communication with stakeholders.

The start date of this position is negotiable and the duration is limited
to a maximum of 4
years. The work place is in Kastanienbaum, Lucerne, Switzerland. For any
