Greetings,

A new position has just been advertised for an Assistant State Climatologist for South Dakota.  The position will be based at South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD.  The state climatologist office is located within the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering department.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will primarily work on climate activities in the state climate office at SDSU working with several USDA grants doing a combination of research, education and extension work. This position will lead various research efforts in the climate office on climate-agriculture and climate-water interaction; coordinate with faculty and staff in South Dakota and other states developing and coordinating educational activities with teachers, graduate students and others for in-class and teacher education activities; and work to develop new extension materials and work with the climate field specialist on developing and training people on climate tools for agriculture.

The successful candidate will also create climate reports and collaborate with other staff on climate-related research; support other climate office activities including answering media and other questions and helping oversee climate databases; be a state co-coordinator for the volunteer precipitation monitoring effort (CoCoRaHs); and will be expected to collaborate on grants which will provide a portion of their salary. This is a term position, subject to the availability of extramural grant funds.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
MS degree in Climatology, Meteorology, Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering or a closely related field is required by date of appointment.
Minimum of one year experience working with climate services.
Demonstrated experience with providing climate services, research activities, project outreach activities, including interfacing with state agencies, and the public.
Experience in teaching or development of educational materials.
Demonstrated collaboration and effective teamwork, interpersonal skills, and effective written and oral communications skills.
